Message from Yoland

Ruyton XI Towns Local History Society

As I have not heard any news from the Societyfor some months, I have been making some enquiries.

The excellent webmaster and poster designer, resigned from the committee in February so the website has not been updated and still has the old committee and coming events for 2020.  The job of publicity has passed to someone who agreed to do the job via Facebook although this is still pending.

For more information about Ruyton History Society please contact the Chairman, Mike Reece MikeReece59@hotmail.co.uk

The final analysis - Ruyton People A Moment in Time 1911-2020

Dear Blogger

Message from Yoland and Irena

Last September Irena White and I embarked on a local history project, to compare the work done by people in the village in the 1911 census and the work done by people today.

Irena and I have now done the final analysis of A Moment in Time, Ruyton XI Towns 1911 - 2020.
It was hard work, trying to get people to take part, but we feel in the end, that we have done something useful for our village history.

We would love to have any feedback on your thoughts on the project.

Japer Rees in conversation
with Jane Wymark

Mon 16th Nov- 7.30pm

We are thrilled to announce this UK event with Jasper Rees and actress Jane Wymark, best known for her roles on the BBC drama Poldark and the television series Midsomer Murders.

Ticket includes a copy of Let's Do It - the first 50 registrants will receive a signed copy

Wood's career was one of the most illustrious and wide-ranging in British comedy, and it was a great sadness that, when she died in 2016 at the age of 62, she had not yet got around to telling her own remarkable life story.

'I will do it one day,' she told journalist and author Jasper Rees, who interviewed her more than anyone else. 'It would be about my childhood, about my first few years in showbusiness, which were really interesting and would make a really nice story.'

Now Jasper Rees will finally tell her rich story in full. He has been given complete and exclusive access to Victoria's extensive archive of personal and professional material, and has conducted interviews with her family, friends and collaborators - including Julie Walters, Celia Imrie, Dawn French and many others.

Jasper Rees is an arts journalist and author who has written for the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Times and theartsdesk.com, which he co-founded.

Jane Wymark and Victoria Wood met in 1971 at Birmingham University and were friends for the rest of Victoria's life. They never worked together but were in constant touch and, more than anything, the thing they had in common was that they were both avid readers. They also corresponded frequently, by letter, then fax, then email, and Jane donated this vast stash to Jasper when he was working on LET'S DO IT. It made all the difference, enabling Jasper to know so much more about Victoria at the key moments in her life when she was working on As Seen on TV, touring as a stand-up and making dinnerladies.

The Greatest Games -
the first 100 to register will receive a signed book-plated edition

Offering unique insights into his own playing career, forensic analysis of the game, and the trademark humour and honesty for which he is known. Inspired by his number one podcast, and told with his trademark wit, humour, intelligence and passion, The Greatest Games sees Carra speak to teammates, rivals, managers and some of the biggest names in the game. With their help, Jamie celebrates the sport and shines a fresh light on a selection of the beautiful game's greatest matches – title deciders, cup finals, against all odds comebacks, underdog tales, old school classics, tactical masterclasses and end to end thrillers. Carragher says: 'I want to look back at those special games that, as a kid, made me fall in love with the game; tell some of the untold stories about the big games I was lucky enough to play in and reflect on the great matches that, since retiring, I've been privileged to witness as a pundit and a fan.' Jamie Carragher was born on 28 January 1978 and after making his way through Liverpool's youth ranks, made his debut for the first team aged eighteen. He played over 700 games for Liverpool, the 2nd most of any player in the club's history,
winning the Champions League as well as 10 other major trophies. He also made 38 appearances for England. Since retirement, Jamie has gone on to become one of the country's top football pundits and analysts.

Where she meets boy-inventor Rahul – who is also lonely and bored.

Together, Rahul and Pip are no longer lonely. But they have a whole load of new problems, including hiding talking animals from Rahul's parents, and finding a way back to the future.

Plus – just maybe – saving the world…

Garth Nix

Tues 10th Nov - 7.30pm

Tickets £22 includes a copy of
The Left-Handed Booksellers of London

Join At Home With 4 Indies alongside best-selling fantasy author Garth Nix, as he talks about his new book The Left-Handed Booksellers of London.

A girl's quest to find her father leads her to an extended family of magical fighting booksellers who police the mythical Old World of England when it intrudes on the modern world. From the bestselling master of fantasy, Garth Nix. In a slightly alternate London in 1983, Susan Arkshaw is looking for her father, a man she has never met.

Crime boss Frank Thringley might be able to help her, but Susan doesn't get time to ask Frank any questions before he is turned to dust by the prick of a silver hatpin in the hands of the outrageously attractive Merlin. Merlin is a young left-handed bookseller (one of the fighting ones), who with the right-handed booksellers (the intellectual ones), are an extended family of magical beings who police the mythic and legendary Old World when it intrudes on the modern world, in addition to running several bookshops. Susan's search for her father begins with her mother's possibly misremembered or misspelt surnames, a reading room ticket, and a silver cigarette case engraved with something that might be a coat of arms.

Merlin has a quest of his own, to find the Old World entity who used ordinary criminals to kill his mother. As he and his sister, the right-handed bookseller Vivien, tread in the path of a botched or covered-up police investigation from years past, they find this quest strangely overlaps with Susan's. Who or what was her father? Susan, Merlin, and Vivien must find out, as the Old World erupts dangerously into the New.
