LOCAL HISTORY BLOG - Number 2

Hi everyone,

Here is the second Local History article, and it poses a very interesting conundrum.  If you can work out why there is a churchyard 3/4 of a mile from the church, do please let us know. 

Many thanks to those who have already sent in contributions but I am looking forward to more articles from our 25 History Keepers - just a page, perhaps with a couple of pictures.

LOCAL HISTORY BLOG 2 - `Is there anybody there?`

A group of Local History Keepers have been brought together to cover many different aspects of local life, past and present - after all, the present becomes history.   We hope to send out short pieces regularly about history in the area - that is Ruyton and the XI Towns, Baschurch, Weston Lullingfields and the Nesses. 

As well as the History Keepers, anyone is very welcome to send in a piece, about A4 size, perhaps with a couple of images, as a PDF.  Chose any subject which is dear to you, such as, your family history, the history of your house, your impressions of the village/area when you first came here, memories of attending a local school, growing up locally - 60, 40. 20, 10 years ago, it`s all history.

Talbot Inn Dinner and Light Bite menus

I know I sent out the Talbot Menu last week but it was incomplete.  Many thanks to Colin for typing it up for me.

The problem has been that the menu is printed on brown paper and has proved difficult to scan and be readable.  However, here is the best I can do with the full Dinner and Light Bite Talbot Menu.

We had a meal there on Thursday, the menu is small but the food was excellent and very well presented.  We are sure the Specials on Fridays and Saturdays will be well worth waiting for.

Could You Volunteer Or Support Oswestry Visitor Information Centre? The Oswestry Visitor Information Centre opened 30 years ago when the A5/A483 bypass was built, it closed last July after visitor numbers plummeted even though it had previously won awards for being the best of its kind in the Midlands and Wales. Our very own Chairman, Clive Knowles, stepped up by founding the Shropshire Tourism Volunteer Group to enable the centre to open in Spring with renewed joie de vivre. Local artists will be invited to display their creations amongst souvenirs, guides and more to help put Oswestry back on the map! Hollis Office Solutions also came forward and General Manager Mark Bamford has been extremely generous by offering stationary, printers and the high probability of telephone and technical support. We now need more local businesses to help this wonderful border town. Hollis are certainly an Oswestry company that has a sense of pride and responsibility for the town, please don't let them carry the weight alone. The Shropshire Tourism Volunteer Group is looking for people of all ages and backgrounds to spare a half day (4 hours) a month to continue the Centre's great work for the town and wider area.
