Birds on the Cliffe, Skylark & Meadow Pipit

Dear Blogger

Message from David Shearan.

Well you lucky people, here are two more fabulous photos from Neil Bennett and this time we have
Skylark with its crest raised and Meadow Pipit in a typical pose on a gorse bush. Both of these bird species are ground nesters and both will typically be building their nests
very soon. Quite a few people have told me they used to see and hear loads of Skylarks on the
Cliffe but sadly current conditions probably don't allow it. However the Meadow Pipits really
ought to be successful if they can get through their breeding season without a lot of disturbance. Who knows, perhaps the continued conservation work and efforts to keep dogs on short leads may even mean Skylarks will return to the Cliffe once again.

Dear Blogger

Message from Lydia Bardsley, Ruyton XI Towns Parish Clerk.

RUYTON XI TOWNS PARISH COUNCIL
NEWSLETTER UPDATE

Town and Parish Councils across Shropshire are gearing up for local and county council elections on 6th May 2021, and this is a fantastic opportunity for local electors in Ruyton XI Towns to help shape the future of the parish, as well as Shropshire Council. See the notices of elections below:

Ruyton XI Towns Notice of elections

Shropshire Council Notice of Unitary elections

What is Ruyton XI Towns Parish Council, and what does it do?

Parish Councils are the first tier of local government, and they can make a real difference to local communities at the grassroots level. Ruyton XI Towns Parish Council usually meets on the 1st Tuesday of every month, (except August), and is comprised of 11 elected members who serve a four–year term.

The Council can:

  • play a vital part in representing the interests of your community
  • work together to improve the quality of life and local environment
  • influence other decision-makers
  • where applicable, deliver services to meet local needs

This is YOUR Council, and it represents YOUR community. If you want the Council to do more, or do things differently, make sure you are registered to vote and that you participate in the May election.

What can YOU do?

As a local elector you can

  • nominate candidates to stand for election
  • stand for election yourself (deadline for hand delivering nomination forms: 4pm 8th April 2021)
  • make sure you are registered to vote by 19th April 2021
  • if needed, apply for a postal vote (by 20th April 2021) or proxy vote (by 27th April 2021)
  • in May, cast your vote in person, by post, or by proxy to elect councillors to represent the interests of Ruyton XI Towns parish

Who can be a Parish councillor?

Anyone can be elected as councillor as long as:

  • they are at least 18 years old on the day of the election, AND
  • they are a UK/EU/Commonwealth citizen, AND EITHER
  • they are a local elector, OR
  • they live or work within 3 miles of Ruyton XI Towns parish, OR
  • they occupy premises (as a tenant or owner) in the Council's area,

and as long as they are not disqualified from being elected.

More information on standing for election is available on the dedicated Local Elections Page of the Parish Council website. If your question is not answered by the website, please email the Parish Council Clerk or phone (01691 238267 – office hours only please). NB. The clerk can provide the polling and district numbers for proposers and seconders (which are needed for the nomination form), but ultimately it is the responsibility of candidates to complete and deliver their own nomination forms.

Shaping the future of Ruyton XI Towns Parish

Parish Councils serves their communities best when they are made up of capable, committed, and passionate councillors who want to make a positive impact, and who work together as a team to make a difference in their local community. By playing your part in the upcoming Parish Elections, YOU can help shape the future of Ruyton XI Towns Parish.

Birds on the Cliffe - Willow Warbler versus Chiff Chaff

Dear Blogger

Message from David Shearan

Two birds for the price of one in the continuing story of the birds on the Cliffe. These two species are so similar that these photos might show two Willow Warblers, two Chiffchaffs, or one of each. They are both summer migrants and should appear on the Cliffe any day soon having flown in from Africa or even Siberia (over 12,000Km). Amazingly they can weigh as little as 9g by the time they arrive on our shores. You would have to be quite expert to distinguish these birds by appearance alone but there's no mistaking their songs. The Chiffchaff sings its own name "chiff, chaff, chiff, chaff" whereas the Willow Warbler has a short and sweet descending song, described by some whimsical folk as like a 'fairy waterfall'. Both of these amazing birds nest either on the ground or very low down. Just think how far they have come just to be with us. Surely it's only fair that we do what we can to protect them while they are here? The protected breeding season is from the end of March to the beginning of August, just four months. If you walk dogs on the Cliffe can you compromise for four months out of twelve and keep your dogs on a short lead? David

Petition to reopen BASCHURCH STATION

Dear Blogger

Article in the Shropshire Star.

Robert Jones, Liberal Democrat candidate for Baschurch in the council elections, has set up a petition to re-open Baschurch Station.

Bearing in mind the huge number of houses which have been built in Baschurch, meaning so many extra cars are using the roads, opening the station would reduce traffic locally as well as reducing pollution.

The petiton can be found on line at

Birds on the Cliffe - the Garden Warbler

Dear Blogger

Message from David Shearan

Birdwatchers often use the abbreviation LBJ which stands for Little Brown Job and it perfectly describes this bird which is a Garden Warbler. This is another summer migrant which flies from central and Southern Africa to the UK and some of them to the Cliffe. It is also another bird that nests low down in a shrub or small tree or among plant stems. It might be boring in appearance (it's Latin species name is actually 'borin') but it's song is spectacular, a stream of sweet music that can sometimes last for up to a minute. It's possible to confuse the songs of Blackcap and Garden Warbler but you could not confuse them by sight.

Beginner`s Veg by the Three Growbags

Dear Blogger

News from the Three Growbags

The 3Growbags have written a book – Glory be! It has come about in rather an unexpected way, and in fact stems (see what I did there?) from the pandemic. A year ago in the first Lockdown, there were a few big positives among a morass of negatives, and one of them was the huge upsurge in the number of gardeners out there – 3 MILLION more at a rough estimate, apparently…

Back last March, there was a lot of talk about possible food shortages, and with everyone unexpectedly having more time at home, folks young and old were thinking that they'd like to try growing some fresh produce for themselves, even if they didn't have a garden. We Growbags decided we could help with that a bit, and on 22 March 2020, we launched our Dig Your Owna For Corona (DYOFC) series of blogs running over a fortnight, aimed at complete beginners to veg-growing.

Now you can buy the book by going to https://the3growbags.com/

Answers to State Craft Quiz earlier this week

Dear Blogger

Answers to the State Craft Quiz earlier this week.

State Craft

Bonar Law was the first British Prime Minister to be born outside of the UK in the then British colony of New Brunswick, now Canada.

Hugh Gaitskell. Labour leader from December 1955 he battled to rid the party of Clause lV which committed the party to nationalisation, was opposed to Suez, unilateral disarmament and British entry to the EEC. He died in 1963 aged 56 of complications from Flu following a visit to the Soviet Union which spawned many conspiracy theories.

Harold Wilson had a holiday home in the Scilly Isles. He nearly drowned, aged 57, in 1973 having fallen out of his boat. Six months later he became Prime Minister again.

Canada. He was Liberal leader and PM three times up to 1948.

Novelist John Buchan who was famous for The Thirty Nine Steps made into many film adaptions.

Australia. He founded the Liberal Party and served two terms as Prime Minster 1939-41 and 1949-1966.

Sirimavo Bandaranaike became Prime Minister of Ceylon, later Sri Lanka, and served  three terms.

Gamal Abdel Nasser. The monarchy was abolished in 1953 but Nasser only became second President in 1956.

Umberto 11 who reigned for just 34 days in 1946 giving him the nickname the May King. His father King Victor Emmanuel 111 stepped aside hoping that this would neutralise the referendum abolishing the monarchy which was already in preparation.

Alexander 111 - he died of terminal kidney disease. His father had been assassinated which fate also attended his son Tsar Nicholas 11.

Theodore Roosevelt Jnr 26th President 1901-1909. An early conservationist he was most proud of the creation of National Parks. His nickname was Teddy and his face is carved into the rocks at Mount Rushmore. He was distantly related to FD Roosevelt.

Alec Douglas-Home, PM October 1963-October 1964. Born in Mayfair in the same house where Barbara Cartland he had various titles throughout his life but renounced his earldom when he became PM.

This was allegedly said by the mercurial David Loyd-George earlier in his career rather than Winston Churchill who had rather stronger criticism of Chamberlain's appeasement policy.

George Lansbury, whose daughter is Angela Lansbury. Lansbury operated in a period of  political turbulence. Widely regarded as a man of principal a postwar Polar housing estate is named after him.

Jeremy Thorpe. Credited with a revival in Liberal fortunes at the ballot box, Thorpe's political career rose to great heights only to be dashed by scandal in the manner of a Greek tragedy.

Ideas wanted for improving Doctor`s Meadow Playing Fields

Dear Blogger

Message from David Shearan.

Does anyone else think we could do more with Doctor's Meadow playing fields? We have someone who wants to improve the goalpost nets and I am keen to get the football playing surface sorted. I also quite fancy having a hard surface track round the perimeter to make it accessible to more people but also to provide a good surface for walking, running and biking. What do you think? Ideas are welcome but I am also looking for a few people who want to help sort out the ideas and seek a grant to let us implement them. David Shearan dave.shearan@icloud.com

Another Cliffe bird - The Blackcap

Dear Blogger

Message from David Shearan

Today's bird to look out for on the Cliffe is the Blackcap (thanks once again to Neil Bennett). This is the male bird - the female has the same appearance except she has a brown cap. Some Blackcaps overwinter in Britain but generally we start to see them in April and May when they migrate here from Germany and North Europe. Their song is a delight and a real promise of summer. They typically nest in bramble and other low thickets so this really is one of our nesting birds that are at risk of being disturbed if we are not careful. David

Birds on the Cliffe

Dear Blogger

Message from David Shearan.

BIRDS ON THE CLIFFE Now here is a real beauty. This is a Green Woodpecker and this is a cracking photo by
Neil Bennett not least because they are notoriously difficult to see.
However you can hear them really easily and once heard never forgotten because it sounds
like a long ringing laugh, sometimes called a yaffle. This isn't a ground nesting bird, it nests in excavated holes like the Great Spotted
Woodpecker, but it does feed on the ground. The Cliffe is a good habitat
because the Heath supports populations of ants and the Green Woodpecker eats a lot of
ants and their eggs and larvae. It's a fabulous bird and one that would be sorely missed. Listen out and see if you can
hear one when you are next there - https://youtu.be/gAdy_5yhWHY David

Can you help?

An example of birds that nest on The Cliffe

Dear Blogger

Message from David Shearan.

You know this thing about protecting nesting birds by keeping dogs on a lead while on the Cliffe? Someone asked if there really are nesting birds up there. There are at least 20 species of ground/low nesting birds that take advantage of this brilliant space and here is one of them. It's a Stonechat and a real specialist of this habitat (open spaces with scrub and gorse). We saw a pair yesterday while working on the heather reseeding and they were obviously prospecting for a nesting site. You can help to protect beautiful birds like this. Please don't allow your dogs to roam across the Cliffe. Thank you Neil Bennett for the amazing photo.

Dear Blogger

Thanks from David Shearan.

Thank you to all the volunteers who turned up yesterday and helped with the raking and
heather reseeding. It was so good to get it all done in one day. Apparently it could take
18 months to 2 years before the heather growth becomes obvious but in the meantime it
will be interesting to see how the habitat develops and what wildlife takes advantage. David
