Footpaths and rights of way

Message from Sue Boulding, Baschurch.

Thousands of footpaths, alleys and bridleways across the UK face being lost forever within a decade under a clause in right-to-roam legislation, campaigners have warned.

From 1 January 2016, walkers, horseriders – and even those taking regular shortcuts to the shops in towns – will have 10 years to apply to save any rights of way that existed before 1949 but do not appear on official maps.

Experts on land access rights say the clock is ticking to save routes that many people take for granted as public highways but that do not appear on official records.

On 1 January 2026, old footpaths and bridleways that are not recorded on the councils' official Definitive Map of Rights of Way may cease to carry public rights," warned Wadey, the co-author of Rights of Way: Restoring the Record, a guide on how to collect evidence and make an application to register a right of way.

He said urban alleyways were of greatest concern, with shortcuts behind houses under threat from homeowners extending their gardens, or fencing off paths that have existed for decades.

This could affect popular shortcuts on many housing developments; even if the homes were built after 1949, the path around which they were constructed could have existed for longer and so be at risk. The same applies to "desire lines", or well-worn informal direct routes.

With its use of colour and imagery, this is one of the most eye-catching and beautiful Australian films of recent years.

Evelyn (Melissa George), a burlesque queen, bewitches single dad Al (Ewen Leslie) and his teenage son, Fin (Ed Oxenbould) with her zest for life. When father and son discover they are competing for the affections of the same woman, old wounds are reopened over the death of Fin's mother. Through the vivacious Evelyn, Fin learns the power of forgiveness and relinquishes his goddess in return for a family.

It is a bold and promising work, rich in imagery and led by uniformly strong performances. The visuals are the most arresting aspect of the film, grabbing the eye with a bold use of colour and occasional sequences of magical realism.

"Melissa George returns as a radiant, siren-like, moon-eyed florist in a visually rich and intensely styled drama that shimmers with stagey, hipster glamour"– The Guardian

Director: Priscilla Cameron

The final years of Oscar Wilde, and the ghosts that haunted him, are vividly evoked in Rupert Everett's directorial debut. Building from his own 2012 lauded stage portrayal of Wilde in David Hare's The Judas Kiss, Everett physically and emotionally embodies the literary genius as he lives out his last days in exile, in a performance described by critics as 'flawless' and 'the best thing Everett has done'.

The film opens in Paris, where Wilde, by now in his forties, penniless and in poor health, is still reeling after being imprisoned in England for his love affair with Lord Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas (Morgan). Out of prison but a pariah, Wilde swings between grief and a determination to wrest whatever pleasure and beauty he can from the time he has left. His body ailing and heavy, his mind spinning, he survives by falling back on the flamboyant irony and brilliant wit that defined him.

Everett's Wilde is tortured but determined to remain true to himself. His thoughts are filled with love and betrayal and permeated with those closest to him: Bosie, his literary agent Robbie Ross (Edwin Thomas), his great friend Reggie Turner (Firth) and his estranged wife Constance (Watson). As the film travels through Wilde's final act, and journeys from England to France and Italy, desire and loyalty face off, the transience of lust is laid bare, and the true riches of love are revealed.

"Even though it follows the map of every romcom before it, Holderman's film still offers the too-rare chance to marvel at just how good these women are at their craft, how easily they inhabit the bodies and lives of other people."

One of the most popular live acts in the world, the King of the Waltz André Rieu has announced that his 2018 Maastricht concerts will be screened in over 2000 cinemas worldwide across the weekend of 28th – 29th July, as he performs his hometown shows this year with a celebration of love.

Please note that our screenings will take place on Saturday 28th July at 7:00pm & Saturday 4th August at 2:00pm.

'Amore, My Tribute to Love', is the renowned violinists tribute to his love for music, and his love for both of his families; his wife and children, and of course for his Johann Strauss Orchestra, who he has performed with for over 30 years. It follows on from the release of his album 'Amore' last year, which features his own versions of classic love songs, from the worlds of popular and classical music.

For this very special concert, André will be offering a lucky winner the ultimate musical love dedication; all cinema-goers will be invited to dedicate one of André's waltz's to their loved ones. André will personally select a dedication and he will announce the winner during the concert on both nights.

The unforgettable concerts that take place in André's hometown of Maastricht in the Netherlands are a sight to behold. Set against the incredible backdrop of the medieval town square, fans flock annually from all corners of the world to watch André perform with his 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra, as well as sopranos, tenors, and some very special guests. The concerts are packed full of humour, fun and emotion for all ages.

This annual celebration of music that is like no other is also experienced every year in full by hundreds of thousands of fans across the world from the comfort of their local cinema, also treated to some very special behind the scenes extras.

Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins hosts the presentation, interviewing fans and soaking up the joyous atmosphere that bursts right through the cinema screen – as well as catching an exclusive chat with André the moment he steps off

In the near future, artificial intelligence has become so  advanced that 86 year old Marjorie can have a companion who looks and sounds exactly like her dead husband Walter. Her new 'husband' relies on the memories of Marjorie and her family to build an authentic likeness of Walter, resulting in the digging up of past painful events from increasingly diverging perspectives. Played out by an outstanding cast that includes Tim Robbins and Geena Davies, Marjorie Prime is proof once again that some of the very best of science fiction cinema works with small budgets and the exploration of big ideas.

One of our favourite French auteurs François Ozon returns with a sleek but cheeky erotic thriller that puts Fifty Shades to shame.

Marine Vacth (Jeune et Jolie) plays Chloé, a young woman who falls in love with her psychoanalyst Paul (Dardennes' favourite Jérémie Renier). When they decide to move in together, everything seems perfect until a series of discoveries lead her to suspect that he may be living a double life. As she searches for the truth, Chloé's investigations plunge her into a dark and bewildering world of smoke, mirrors and doppelgangers – where nothing is as it seems, and no one can be trusted.

Combining Hitchcockian intrigue with nods to Brian de Palma and late-career David Cronenberg, Ozon delivers a brilliantly OTT film that delights in keeping you guessing.

Filthy, flamboyant and a whole lot of fun.

1941, Belfast. The entire city is paralysed by the threat of German air raids. With his father fighting in Europe and his mother busy trying to make ends meet, young Tom (Art Parkinson) feels very alone. Taking comfort in his natural knack for caring for animals, he finds solace in the company of Buster, the baby elephant at Belfast Zoo.

But before long, even Buster is in danger. As a precaution, the authorities plan to destroy all dangerous animals in the zoo in case they're set free during the bombings. Horrified, Tom vows to save the elephant before he can meet a terrible fate.

Tom and his group of odd but determined friends break into the zoo and smuggle Buster away in the

dead of night. But it turns out hiding a giant animal in the middle of a city isn't easy…

The grouchy Denise Austin (Penelope Wilton) is the children's only hope, as she's the only person who has the space to keep Buster out of sight. But with the entire city on alert, it's only a matter of time before someone spots the elephant in the room…

First-time filmmaker Léonor Serraille and the dazzling Laetitia Dosch burst onto the scene with Jeune Femme, a raucous and playful portrait of a woman in her early 30s in Paris. Following in the footsteps of Frances Ha and Fleabag, it's a sometimes heartbreaking, often hilarious and always relatable nod to the chaos and candour of modern life.

Neurotic and manic, bold and magnetic, Paula (Dosch) is a muddle of contradictions. Fresh from an unceremonious dumping by her boyfriend of 10 years, she finds herself wandering the streets of Paris - jobless, homeless and single - with no idea of what life holds for her next. At 31 years old, with little to show for it but a kidnapped cat and a sense of adventure, she sets out to reinvent herself - new job, new friends, new life - and finds that these things never do come easily.

Testament to the talent of its nearly all-female filmmaking crew, Jeune Femme picked up the coveted Camera d'Or prize for best first feature at the Cannes Film Festival 2017. Anarchic, complicated and undeniably charming, this is the French hot-mess heroine we've long been waiting for.
