Volunteer opportunities on the Montgomery Canal

This appeared on Freegle this morning, it might be of interest for anyone looking for a worthwhile volunteer job.
We open
LlANYMYNECH CANAL WHARF each Saturday and Sunday afternoon until the end of September each year and we really need some new volunteers to help us. This year we are unable to run boat trips so we are dependent on help in the visitor centre to sell items, prepare light refreshments and to welcome visitors. We are also planning to refurbish our wheelchair accessible boat and help with that would be really good and hopefully we can welcome new skippers and crew next year too. Why not pop in for a chat with us?

Road Closed at Junction of West Felton to Queen`s Head and the road to Rednal Mill - so you can`t cross the junction.
If you want to get to Rednal, the alternative route is miles and miles.

As many of you will know Lucinda the vicar of Church around the Cliffe retires very soon and her final service in the benefice is Sunday 19th July.
Lucinda has been here for a long time so I know lots of people will be wanting to come and wish her well in her final service.
The service starts at 10.30 and everyone is welcome and there will be a corner for younger children with their parents to go and play if required and activity sheets for the older children will also be available.
As parking near the church can be difficult, the school will be open so if you are attending , and will be driving please use the school if possible.
Refreshments will be served after the service .

The Letters - a fascinating love story from Oswestry in World War II

THE LETTERS
DEAR GILBERT, DEAR GORDON
When museum curator Mark Hignett began buying WWII-era letters online, he believed he was piecing together the life of an ordinary soldier. At first glance, the letters looked like typical correspondence: full of yearning, daily details, and hopes for peace. But what emerged wasn’t just a wartime chronicle - it was a love story.
As he kept on reading, he slowly realised they were letters from one male soldier to another. At a time when homosexuality was criminalised in Britain and gay soldiers risked court martial, Gilbert and Gordon exchanged intimate, heartfelt correspondence, which are read for this programme by Olly Alexander. Their letters spoke of longing, joy, fear, and hope. In one, Gordon writes simply: “There is nothing more that I desire in life but to have you with me constantly.” In another, he reflects on how the world would see them: “The rest of the world have no conception of what our love is – they do not know that it is love.”
It’s a reminder that while the law branded them criminals, they understood their bond as something deeply human, and deeply right. That dream, however, sat alongside deep fear. In one letter, Gordon pleaded with Gilbert to destroy their correspondence: "Please darling, do this for me in deadly seriousness" - terrified of the consequences if their relationship were discovered. And yet, in another, he imagined a world that would understand: “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all our letters could be published in a more enlightened time?”
In this episode of Illuminated, curator Mark Hignett and producer Ilona Toller assess the content of the letters, which are read by Olly Alexander.

Help eliminate HIMALAYAN BALSAM

HIMALAYAN BALSAM - your property backs onto the River Perry in Ruyton or up to Henged, or you spot this damned invasive plant - Please do your duty and pull it out
The team tackled the area from Platt Bridge along the bank of the Perry on the Queen Elizabeth field.
Further efforts will be made to remove any balsam which remains in the cleared areas but the vast majority of it has now been pulled and cannot therefore re-seed itself.
It would be great if local people could identify the plant and pull up any they see when they are using the field.
There are no known dangers in touching the plant with bare hands as it is in the begonia plant family and pulls from the ground really easily.
Once pulled up (preferably by the roots) it can be left in situ to naturally decompose It must not be removed from where it is growing in order to prevent its spread.
The working parties have endeavoured to pull the balsam and leave it forming a path down to the edge of the water. Hopefully this means those who want to access the water will find that easier.
It rots down and disappears into the ground after a short time but the main objective is to pull it before it seeds. It is an annual plant which if left will return and spread year on year.
Our hope is that pulling the plant over the next few years will largely irradiate it especially once any seed already in the ground has died.

Shropshire Local Plan - Scoping Consultation
Residents may not be aware of the following information concerning the current sites in Ruyton XI Towns and across Shropshire which are being promoted for development in a revised Shropshire Local Plan and the period of consultation is coming to an end.
The Shropshire Local Plan – Scoping Consultation is available online and consultation is open until the 15th July.
Many Parish Councils have alerted residents to this on their websites (not Ruyton XI Towns Parish Council) but the links provided to access the material do not work very satisfactorily.
Bomere Heath and District Parish Council website is an exception. The link it provides is

It might be necessary to copy this into a search engine or address bar (URL bar).

It is important to look at the surrounding Parishes where development will have an impact on Ruyton XI Towns.
Bomere Heath and District Parish Council Councillors “thought that it would be good to share outline proposals for Baschurch and the additional development that could be sited near the Prescott Surgery.”
They have also in common with many other Parish Councils set up a steering group to consider the issues – “If you are interested in participating, please register your interest with the clerk. … We are powerless to start without a full and committed steering group.”

A moderate 5.5-mile walk with 1300ft total ascent, with some steep and rough sections. We walk up Moel-y-Faen and Moel-y-Gamelin, through the spoil heaps of the Berwyn Slate Quarry and return through the Horseshoe pass. Using paths and tracks, there is a short steep ascent on a narrow path towards the end of the walk. Sections of the walk are on exposed hillside, so please have suitable layers. A 6.3-mile leisurely circular walk, mostly on field footpaths and along one of the banks of the Rea Brook, through the Rea Brook Nature Reserve. The route leads us past the Sharpstone Quarry with its fossilised tree remains, past the Greek Orthodox Church and along part of the Shropshire Way. There will be good views of the South Shropshire Hills, weather permitting. Expect stiles and mud. There will be one stop for coffee and one for lunch, please bring your own refreshments.
