KATE HAMER
THE DOLL FUNERAL

TUESDAY 14TH MARCH
7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm)
at Booka

Join us for an evening in the company of Kate Hamer, the bestselling author of The Girl in the Red Coat, as she talks about her new novel The Doll Funeral.

The Doll Funeral is a dark and compelling story of love, loss, family and friendship. Set in and around the Forest of Dean, it opens in the Summer of 1983 when Ruby has just turned 13 and is told by her parents that she is adopted. An unusual girl, Ruby sees things that other people don't, and now she sets out to find her real family.

My name is Ruby. I live with Barbara and Mick. They're not my real parents, but they tell me what to do, and what to say. I'm supposed to say that the bruises on my arms and the black eye came from falling down the stairs.
But there are things I won't say. I won't tell them I'm going to hunt for my real parents. I don't say a word about Shadow, who sits on the stairs, or the Wasp Lady I saw on the way to bed.
I did tell Mick that I saw the woman in the buttercup dress, hanging upside down from her seat belt deep in the forest at the back of our house. I told him I saw death crawl out of her. He said he'd give me a medal for lying.
I wasn't lying. I'm a hunter for lost souls and I'm going to be with my real family. And I'm not going to let Mick stop me.

Kate's second novel is a perfect follow up to The Girl in the Red Coat which was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award 2015. Be prepared to be drawn in!

Tickets: £5 plus booking fee if purchasing online. Ticket price redeemable against a signed hardback copy of The Doll Funeral. Includes a glass of wine or soft drink on arrival.

JESS PHILLIPS
EVERYWOMAN

FRIDAY 24TH MARCH
7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) at Booka

Join us for an evening in the company of Jess Phillips as we celebrate the publication of her book Everywoman: One Woman's Truth About Speaking the Truth.

In the world of politics, telling the truth might seem low on the list of priorities – but this is just one of the reasons why Labour MP, Jess Phillips has created such a storm since her election to Parliament in 2015.

Jess is the poster woman for breaking down barriers, being the ballsy, modern, feminist as well as the everywoman she represents.

Her book is a hilarious, brutally honest manifesto reminding us that we each have a part to play in this world. Everywoman also serves as a piece of reportage from the front-line of being an MP – a group of people who have taken the brunt of the political apathy sweeping the world but who as a whole serve their constituency with dedication and sincerity.

Simultaneously described as 'a breath of fresh air' and 'a pain in the arse', Jess makes no apology for shouting long and loudly about things she cares about. In just over a year she has become renowned as the politician who tells the truth.

Everywoman is the most accessible, passionate, funny political book you'll read this year. So join us for what promises to be a great event – there's lots to talk about!

Tickets: £5 plus booking fee if purchasing online.  Ticket price redeemable against book purchase. Includes a glass of wine /soft drink on arrival.

Tickets available from the bookshop or purchase online here

Can you help? And Weston Pancake Day 28 February

Message from Anita Weeks, Weston Lullingfields.

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH WESTON LULLINGFIELDS

I have printed below and attached both the programme for the coming year  and the  poster for our next event. We will be serving main meal lunches between 12.30 and 2.00 as well as making sweet pancakes all day on Shrove Tuesday.

Just before Christmas we discovered our church boiler was not repairable and it is really difficult to find the right sort of heating engineers. We need to replace the boiler and we need to find a company which is used to supplying systems for large buildings like churches as well as ones experienced in heating circulation. We can't go for any system which requires radiators as the church does not have its own independent water supply at present. Any suggestions most welcome.

Many thanks

This is really worth reading, to see how things have changed since our
children were at Corbet, to see how the little ones will benefit when
they leave our primary schools and for all of us to appreciate the
education local children are getting at The Corbet School.

HISTORY BLOG - The Churchyard Conundrum

"Is there anybody there"?  By Alan Smith

See Alan Smith`s Historically based Theory regarding the query of the 2 Churchyards at the end of the Cliffe.

--------------------------------

Many thanks to those who offered their ideas of why there was a churchyard so far from the church.

Pam Johnson                                                                                                                                                                                                            Trefonen is the same and it puzzles me as the churchyard around the church does not appear to be full.

Dorothy Needham                                                                                                                                                                                              Because it's a different denomination; the Congregationists

Jon Moody                                                                                                                                                                                                             Possibly plague cemeteries?  I believe that prior to 13c most burial was done away from habitation apart from within the monasteries.

Chrissy                                                                                                                                                                 Could there have been concern re plague victims that they wanted buried away from the church?                                    Or, might they have been fighting the Welsh and wanted to bury their enemies away from the church?

Yoland                                                                                                                                                                         In America the `garden` round a house is still called a yard Yard

The word Yard  and Garden both come from the Anglo-Saxon geard, compare "garden" (German Garten), Old Norse garðr,

In areas where farming is an important part of life, a yard is also a piece of enclosed land for farm animals or other agricultural purpose.
