Oswestry Library Events

The annual Summer Reading Challenge is here! Those of you who have taken part before will know that it is a massive fixture on the library calendar, and we always have lots of exciting events and activities to share with you over the summer.

If you have never heard of the Summer Reading Challenge before, it is an annual challenge for children, created by the Reading Agency and delivered by libraries all over the country. The idea is that the children read six books of their choice over the summer holidays. They receive an incentive prize for every two books, and win a gold medal and certificate if they complete before the end of the summer. Not only is it enormous fun, but reading over the summer has been proven to reduce the 'reading dip' that can often be observed in children when they return to school after a long holiday without books. (To read more on the research behind the challenge, visit the Reading Agency Website.)

Every year, the Summer Reading Challenge has a different theme. This year it is 'Mischief Makers', supported by the Beano. In Shropshire, we are also choosing to offer a Pre-School Summer Reading Challenge, where children under 4 can collect stickers for each time they visit the library, and an Adult/Teen challenge, which is to enter four mini book reviews to be entered into a prize draw. So the whole family can join in!

The Summer Reading Challenge launches on Saturday 14th of July, so feel free to pop into your local library to find out more, or to sign up. If you would like to find out about the events that are running in all Shropshire Libraries please visit the events page on our website.
