LOCAL HISTORY BLOG number 7.

Hi everyone,

Here is the LOCAL HISTORY BLOG number

7 - Derek Riches` memories of joining up for his National Service.

First, some information which not everyone might be aware of.

From 1939 until 1963, National Service specified that single men aged 18 to 40 years old were liable to be called up for military service. There was a system of Military Service Tribunals to adjudicate upon claims for exemption upon the grounds of performing civilian work of national importance, domestic hardship, health, and concientious objection. The law went through several changes before the war ended.

After the Second World War young men on National Service served in Malaya, Korea, Sudan, Cyprus, Kenya and several other `hot spots` in the world until 1963.
