For many years, The Rotary Club of Oswestry has been grateful to have a Tree of Light in front of the Parish Church which has raised thousands of pounds for local charities. This year our fifteenth annual Tree of Light event will be moved to a more prominent position on the forecourt of the Sainsbury's store where it will be much more visible to the public.
We would like to invite all on your mailing list and their friends and colleagues to the official switching on of the lights ceremony starting at 5.30 pm on Saturday 1st December. Mr John Abram MBE, High Sheriff of Shropshire, will perform the ceremony, which will also include carol singing lead by the Ifton Colliery Band and a choir from The Marches School. Mulled wine and mince pies will be served, courtesy of Sainsbury’s.
Club President John Ward said: “We are very excited about this year’s event. We think the new location will enable more people to see the tree and perhaps be encouraged to sponsor a light to celebrate a life or an event and to support some very deserving organisations – Hope House, Midlands Air Ambulance, Cricket Federation for People with Disabilities, North Shropshire Special Olympics and other Rotary good causes. Donation forms can be down-loaded from the Club website at www.rotarycluboswestry.co.uk as well as collected from three shops in the town: Sainsburys, Paperwrite and Lawrence’s Direct. Of course, Club members will also be present at Sainsbury’s at the switching-on ceremony and at certain other times to help members of the public who might want to make donations.”
Event Organiser, Rotarian Mike Jones, added: “I would like to thank Sainsbury’s, who have been most supportive of all our efforts. We hope that the symbolism of the Tree of Light will help many people to celebrate, to remember and also to give to these very good causes at Christmastide. Equally, we hope that the ceremony on December 1st will provide an excellent start to the Christmas season – and that many people will be able to join us to enjoy it.
