LADS - Llanymynech Amateur Dramatic Society

A DOUBLE HELPING OF DRAMA from LADS` own in house writers
Great entertainment in a neighbouring village!

A DOUBLE HELPING OF DRAMA

The LADS, Llanymynech Amateur Dramatic Society, are staging two one-act plays in February, both written by their own resident playwrights.

First off is After the Llantin Tarantino WI garden produce show, by Neil Rhodes
The ladies of the Llantin Tarantino WI are kind, generous and peace loving. But when it comes to garden produce shows, they enter to win trophies. And when the Royal Horticultural Society decide some of the entries are not entirely correct or fair, the ladies fight back with everything they have: secateurs, garden loppers, and weedkiller!
Not that they are at all influenced by American film director Quentin Tarantino’s liking for violence.

In Inside Job by Marg Kynaston, Judith – on remand for murder – is visited by best friend Chris. They reminisce about old times and as the plot unfolds we realise things are not as cut and dried as they seem. The play will having you laughing and gasping in turn until the final curtain.

Both plays are being performed from Thursday, February 21 until Saturday 23 at Llanymynech village hall at 7.45pm.
Tickets cost £6 (£5 concessions) and are available approximately three weeks in advance from Llanymynech village hall, Mile End Tourist Information Centre, Llanymynech post office and the Herbarium in Oswestry, or telephone 01691 830558 to reserve in advance.

Problems with Roads & Rivers

Two things which have accompanied the recent horrible weather are Potholes appearing and growing in the roads and blockages in the River Perry.

Having had dealings about both of the above, It is worth keeping the contact details on who to report problems to.

Potholes/roads        Steve Oakley    Steve.Oakley@Shropshire.gov.uk
There is also a report form on the Shropshire CC website see Roads

Blockages in the River        The Environment Agency        Brian Glover 03708  506 506
Don`t forget that they have serious flooding problems to deal with so, unless your house is about to be inundated, just report the problem and the chaps will arrive to deal with it in due course.

These two useful contact are now on the contacts list which I sent out last spring - it is a pretty big job to check out 276 entries so do bare with me - I will update the list and send it out!

Grug Hill Leak update

A local villager has just sent me this update on the water leak from the field behind Oaklands that runs over the bottom of Grug Hill:-

Hello Colin, just to keep you informed of the latest development regarding the above today 3 Shropshire Council employees arrived and found a manhole under about 6" of soil near to the leak. They were only here for about 1 hour. I'm not sure what they did but  the problem may have been due to a blocked storm water drain.

Let's hope it is fixed - we'll keep an eye on it - and thanks to the villager.

MEETING POSTPONED

You might remember the
    2008     Parish Plan
    2011    Toolkit Event and
    2012    World Cafe

These meetings were organised to find out what the people of Ruyton XI Towns wanted for the future of our village.

Well, now we have a PLACE PLAN as a way of identifying the infrastructure priorities of the local community and how these could be delivered.   18 Place Plans areas in Shropsbhire, each focussed around a market town and the surrounding rural parishes.

As part of the commitment to annually review the content of the Place Plans Shropshie Council are now asking all Parish and Town Councils to respond to existing details to help them ensure that the infrastructure priorities currently identified for communities within the Place Plans are correct and appropriate.

For copies of the place plans go to http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/planning.nsf and follow the links to Shropshire Place Plans

There will be two meetings at Ruyton Primary School which have been
postponed to Tuesday 29th January:

The first session, for the local business community groups and stakeholders, will be from 5.30 to 6.30pm.

The second session, for local residents from Ruyton XI Towns, is from 7.00 to 8.30pm.

Doubtless traffic through the village, Shotatton Cross Roads and planning permission to break into the Big Walls will crop up.   I see that two of those concerns were raised at a Parish Council meeting on 13th April 1992!!     Oh yes, and the commitment to Press for an early start to the Shelton - Harlescott road to help take away traffic from the village - HO HO HO!

Colin Case
-----------------
This is from today's Shropshire Star (19th January 2013) - a victory for Ruyton XI Towns Parish Council:-

MP Owen Paterson calls for priority action at A5 blackspot

A roundabout should be a priority for an accident blackspot junction on Shropshire’s A5, MP Owen Paterson has said.

Mr Paterson, MP for north Shropshire and the environment minister, has been campaigning for improvements to the A5 between Shrewsbury and Oswestry for more than a decade. And he said action needed to be taken at Shotatton crossroads close to Ruyton XI Towns, which has seen many accidents.

Mr Paterson is now backing a campaign by Ruyton XI Towns Parish Council for a roundabout at the crossroads and plans to hold talks with Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow to see if the unitary authority can help finance a scheme.

In 2003 Mr Paterson and local councillor Dilys Gaskill hijacked the coach carrying officials to the opening ceremony for Nesscliffe bypass and took them to see Shotatton crossroads. But he said he believed little had been done since.

Road safety cameras have been installed on the A5 at Shotatton in recent years following the introduction of a 40mph speed limit.

Mr Paterson said: “I have been calling for something to be done not only at Shotatton but the entire stretch of the A5 between Nesscliffe and the Shropshire border for more than 10 years. This is one of my earliest campaigns and still little has been done.

In an ideal world the entire stretch, including the Oswestry bypass, should be a dual carriageway. But the priority has to be Shotatton crossroads and the road between Wolf’s Head and Queen’s Head.

These are tough economic times and we can simply have not got the money to build new roads and fund road schemes. The Government has inherited a huge financial debt.

However, I will continue to press for improvements to this crossroads. I will also be talking to the leader of Shropshire Council to look at ways that the council could help out. I would like to see if there is any flexibility in a joint improvement scheme.”

Weather - from the Emergency Planning Team.

This information has been sent on from Shropshire County Council`s
EMERGENCY PLANNING TEAM

I thought you would appreciate an update on the  weather situation.  There is some potential  for some patchy light snow at times today, Thursday, which may lead to some icy surfaces. However, the main concerns relate to an area of heavier and widespread snow moving from the west across the West Midlands region during the early hours of Friday. This may well persist through the day and into the evening and has the potential to cause significant disruption. Up to 10cm of snow could fall quite widely with up to 15cm in places. There is also the scope for strong winds to cause drifting and possibly lead to snow adhering to overhead power lines etc.

An AMBER warning has now been issued by Met Office HQ indicating the potential for significant disruption.

Kind regards,

Aggie

Closure of Big Walls

Our Parish Council questioned the continued closure of Big Walls on Monday night, following the collapse of the wall over Christmas.
I contacted the SC Highways Team yesterday to challenge the closure.
I received a reply within two hours, during which time an Engineer has visited the site.
The answer is that the remainder of the wall is considered to be unstable, and therefore continues to present a potential hazard. Work continues to stabilise the wall.
I would like to congratulate the Team on such a speedy reaction, even if we didn't get the answer we would all hope for.

A date for the diary

Our Councillor is holding a Place Plan Review next Tuesday 22nd in the School.
There are two sessions - the first one at 5:30 local businesses and Community Groups, and the second is at 7:00 (til 8:30) for all local residents.
The Place Plan is important, particularly when CIL money is allocated.
The Parish Council has already made a Place Plan submission, with our priority requirement being for funding for a new Parish Hall - you might remember the Parish Council Newsletter published with the Winter Three Parishes in early December.
But our Councillor is keen to validate this with a Public Meeting, so put this date in your diary - the outcome will be important when we start to accumulate CIL monies on the back of new Developments in the Parish.

I note from the Local Press that our Councillor is not standing as our Conservative Candidate at the May Elections, so it will also be a chance to thank her for her efforts on our behalf over the last few years.

FLICKS IN THE STICKS in Kinnerley

Salmon Fishing In The Yemen (12a)

A visionary sheik believes his passion for the peaceful pastime of salmon fishing can enrich the lives of his people, and he dreams of bringing the sport to the not so fish-friendly desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative to turn the dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain's leading fisheries expert who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable.

Water Leak & Electrics

WATER LEAK & WORK ON ELECTRICS
in School Road, Ruyton XI Towns

The water leak (or whatever it is) at the bottom of Grug Hill is still flowing, but has frozen. However, it has been gritted - either by Shropshire Council in response to my message last night or by a helpful villager from the grit bin near the junction - either way, thanks. Shropshire Council continue to investigate the source of the water - either a pipe leak, spring or surface run-off or similar.

Also in School Road there is tremendous activity and traffic lights. The engineers tell me that they are replacing some power lines and associated poles etc. They are guessing at a couple of days, but with the size of the workforce and their activity levels and machinery it may be done quicker than expected. I assume local residents have already been informed, but now the rest of us know as well.

It gets cold in winter

Remember 1982 when snow and freezing fog went on for days & Shropshire had the coldest temperature in Britain - until this was taken back by Scotland soon afterwards.

Remember 1963 when the snow came on Boxing Day and continued until March, if you are too young do google Big Freeze of 1963 edited by Karl King

Then there was 1947 when the big freeze started on 21st January - another week to go - There were restricted coal supplies, at a time when that was virtually the only fuel, and electricity cuts because of restricted coal supplies for the power stations which led to closing of power stations and shutting down of industry.

It was pretty cold in 2010 and 2011 too!                    I experienced them all.

ALWAYS REMEMBER - it is normal to have snow, frost and rain in the winter so
 BE PREPARED!

The latest information indicates outbreaks of light snow will begin to affect parts of Shropshire and Staffordshire by late afternoon today. Snow will become more widespread across the West Midlands region during the course of the evening and continue into the night before clearing away to the east by around 0300 in the early hours of Monday morning. There’s scope for a covering of snow in many parts of the West Midlands region with between 2 and 5 cm possible, perhaps more on the Staffordshire Moorlands. Hence it’s likely to be a slow start during theMonday morning commute with some difficult conditions for a time. However, any disruption is expected to be short lived with an area of rain (and rising temperatures) expected to move across the West Midlands region during Monday morning (between around 0900 and 1200) bringing a quick thaw of lying snow in most places. The Yellow warning (low likelihood of medium impacts) on the Met Office website will be updated to reflect the latest information.

Temperatures will again fall during Monday evening with ice likely to be a problem where road surfaces remain damp from earlier rain.

The forecast for the remainder of next week indicates cold but mainly dry conditions are in store although there may be occasions when a few snow showers drift in from the east. Daytime temperatures are not expected to rise much above freezing with sharp overnight frosts.

Kind regards,

Aggie
