Curlew & Lapwing Survey

If you are already a keen walker, why not add some extra bird spotting to your perambulations.

Subject: FW: Help Needed for New Curlew and Lapwing Survey

A new community wildlife group (CWG) is starting in Oswestry to study Lapwings and Curlews locally as part of a campaign led by Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Shropshire Ornithological Society. They are looking for volunteers to take part in the project.

The populations of these once-familiar birds have plummeted in recent years. This project aims to establish where they can still be found, and then to work with landowners and farmers to attempt to reverse the decline.

The proposed study area extends from Oswestry in the north to Kinnerley in the south, and eastwards from Nantmawr to Ruyton-XI-Towns: it's one of the few remaining Curlew hotspots in Shropshire. It's a large area.

The CWG are looking to recruit at least 30 helpers and reach as many local people as possible, not only to carry out the survey but also to cultivate interest in our remaining Lapwings and Curlews.

They are holding a launch meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 7th March at Morda Social Club, which is open to anyone who would like to know more about these wonderful birds and what can be done to help them. You don't need to be an expert birdwatcher to take part: everyone's welcome!

There will also be a second new community wildlife group covering the Severn-Vynrwy confluence, with Melverley at its heart.  Their launch meeting will be held on Monday 26th February at Alberbury.  Attached information above for Meverley, Pentre end.

For more information please see the attached leaflet about the project. If you would like any additional information, or printed copies of the leaflet, please contact Claire Backshall

Dear Corrie

I am helping to set up a new community wildlife group (CWG) to study Lapwings and Curlews locally as part of a campaign led by Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Shropshire Ornithological Society.  Joan Zorn of the Llimeys told me that you're brilliant at distributing news to potentially interested parties and suggested that I seek your assistance!

As you may know, the population of Lapwing and Curlew has plummeted in recent years.

It's a large area, and we'll need at least 30 helpers to cover it fully. We are trying to reach as many local people as possible, not only to carry out the survey but also to cultivate interest in our remaining Lapwings and Curlews.

We are holding a launch meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 7th March at Morda Social Club, open to anyone who'd like to know more about these wonderful birds and what can be done to help them. It's not necessary to be an expert birdwatcher to take part: everyone's welcome!

I have attached a leaflet about the project and would be most grateful for any help that you could offer in putting the word around.  If you'd like any additional information, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you very much -

With best wishes
