Ruyton history website

www.eleventowns.uk/history.html

There had to be something good come out of this bout of foul weather - and it has been time to add several new articles to the history website.

Church Restoration 1868 - this was a huge job instigated by the vicar, Rev. Frederick Paget Wilkinson.  My apologies for the `extras` in the picture of the font but I did not think it was my place to start re-arranging the furniture in the church!

James Cooper 19C memories - this really shows how much we know when we are old which the young know nothing about and so we should write down our memories.  There is so much we would not know about the 19C if James Cooper or Cowper had not written it down and worked with local historian, Robert Lloyd Kenyon.

Family History, The Cunninghams - this is an example of how we have knowledge about every day life in Ruyton, thanks to Eugenie, the village Doctor`s wife writing to her sons in France and Canada - and the letters being kept for future generations.

Irena White and I are always happy to help with any Family History enquiries.

Charter Celebrations - Can you believe it is 10 years since the village celebrated the granting of Ruyton`s Borough Charter!   This piece is how it all started, back in 2004 and there will be updates on what we did and how we raised the cash to hold a Medieval Festival on what was surely the most miserable, wet, windy and cold June day possible!

Ruyton XI Borough Charter - a bit heavy going this so I wrote the piece below

Borough Charter Explained - this is what it was all about, Ruyton was given the chance to become a big city like Bristol but somehow it never happened!  That is why I live here.

War Horses in two World Wars - A bit of light relief here, an amusing story from World War I and a little known story from the `Forgotten Army` who fought the Burma Campaigne through that awful jungle.

Glorious Otter Hunt on the Perry - perhaps not for avid animal lovers but this is history, these things happened and absolutely no point in us wingeing about it.  I find the most interesting bit is how verbose the report is, imagine all those words in a newspaper with the attention span of today.

Aaah, I should say that there might be some gaps in posting more articles as my time is taken up with preparing the garden for opening on 24th April

Keep warm and drive carefully,

Yoland
