Chaos at Platt Bridge

Dear Blogger

Latest on the incident on Platt Bridge thanks to Trevor Alison

The bridge was supposed to be CLOSED on 30th & 31st March

But opened to traffic around 3.30 yesterday afternoon

At some time since the work was completed but the morter not yet set, an HGV managed to hit the new work when turning into Dairi Pak.

The workers arrived this morning and closed half the bridge so cars are getting through when convenient.

And we still have to face the closures in Church Street - Please will someone keep me informed.

Road Closures - very useful update

Dear Blogger

Update on Road Closures - the Platt Bridge is closed to all traffic, including the vehicles which steam down the Brownhill and have to turn round at Mill Lane!

Church Street Closures from Robert Jones, Shropshire County Councillor for Ruyton XI Towns and Baschurch

Church St is planned be fully closed (subject to a final decision on the works) between 9.30 and 3.30 from the 7th to the 10th of April. Other works on the same scheme would be happening over the following week but are not expected to require closure of the road. Outside of those hours (so before 9.30am and after 3.30pm) the road will be open to traffic. The exact times and extent of closure could be impacted by unanticipated conditions, but I believe that is unlikely in this case.

Many thanks to Robert for making this so clear.

Road closures and bus times in Ruyton XI Towns - some information at last!

Dear Blogger

Thanks to Steve Boulding who contacted Robert Jones, Shropshire Council`s representative for Baschurch and Ruyton Parish Councils, who seems to have sorted out the Tanat Valley bus times, and he wrote this to Steve.

"I have just written to Tanat Valley and will chase up with officers tomorrow to establish if and why the operator was not properly advised. I am particularly angry about this as I had specifically sought assurances beforehand that there would be proper communication with the operator around these road closures".

"In the meantime, Tanat Valley have posted an update on Facebook (which I have shared) as follows:

??Service 576 - Ruyton XI Towns: Road Closure Notice ??

Platt Bridge will be closed on Monday, 30 March and Tuesday, 31 March 2026. During this time, Service 576 will stop at The Cross in Ruyton, then return to the A5 and turn left at Shottaton Junction, continuing to the Admiral Duncan in Baschurch.

Due to the extra time needed for the diversion, the 10:05 and 17:05 Shrewsbury-Baschurch services will not run. We are sorry for the short notice and any inconvenience this may cause".

"Regarding works in May, I was not aware of any works scheduled for May, but it is possible the dates were a kind of temporary placeholder for a contractor considering different dates to carry out work.

"To be aware, Severn Trent Water have plans to carry out works to upgrade the water main along Church St at some time this year, and Shropshire Council are awaiting details about that work in order to set a date to carry out planned resurfacing works along the same stetch of road once Severn Trent have completed their works. I have asked STW for an update on this and I am still awaiting a response".

Unfortunately this does not make clear what the plans are for Church Street Closure,

Is it 7th to 10th to prepare for changing the Zebra crossing to a Puffin Crossing?

Or 7th to 17th to prepare and change from a Zebra to a Puffin Crossing?

I hope this is of some help,  I will of course pass on any further information if and when I get it.

Yoland

Booka - An evening with Lis Earle on How to Age

Dear Blogger

Message from Booka Bookshop, Oswestry

AN EVENING WITH LIZ EARLE on HOW TO AGE - 20th April 2026

See attached poster

Join us for an evening with Liz Earle, one of the most respected names in UK wellness and beauty as she talks about her new book How to Age, an inspirational guide to ageing well.

So much of what we have been told about ageing – especially as women, is wrong. We're not meant to shrink, fade or be sidelined, we're not here to spend our later years in silent decline. We have just never been shown the full picture of what is possible – or how we can take control of it. But now Liz Earle's new book How to Age is here to blow the cover.

The strategies Liz shares in this book are different from anything you have read before. Liz has tried and tested these protocols, combed the scientific papers and cutting-edge reports on cellular renewal and longevity to synthesise the very best evidence-based biohacks and practical, easy-to-implement, daily plans to improve and boost your energy as you age. She has used these same protocols to turn back her biological age by decades and she now feels stronger, happier and more purposeful in her 60s than in any other decade of her life.

And in her new book she shares her findings so now you can, too.

* Strengthen your body at a cellular level
* Understand the primary power of sunlight, water, vibrational energy on your circadian rhythms
* Become more resilient to chronic disease and modern viruses
* Look and feel more youthful in both appearance and outlook
* Use the daily plans in each chapter to achieve your goals

Women are living longer but often in poorer health, so grab the reins and add abundant health to your years. Be more youthful, more vibrant now – This is How to Age.

Get ready for an evening full of advice, top tips and inspiration from the champion of women's health!

Bells to ring out for the Festival!

Bellringers from St Oswald's church Oswestry will be at St John the Baptist Whittington to usher in the start of the festival from 6.15 - 7pm on Thursday 14 May.

What better way to celebrate than with the joyous sound of church bells!

Saturday 16th May, 4.00 – 4.30pm:  Book Signing with Dr Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason

Kadiatu is a writer, speaker and passionate advocate for music education in schools. Her most recent title To be Young, Gifted and Black has been longlisted for the 2026 Women's Prize for Non-Fiction. Her 2020 memoir House of Music: Raising the Kanneh-Masons won both the Royal Philharmonic Society Storytelling Award, and the Indie Book Award for Non-Fiction.
Come and meet Kadiatu after the family concert where copies will be on sale.
Braimah Kanneh-Mason

Braimah has been named as a Classic FM Rising Star 2026, one of 30 inspiring musicians under 30. Congratulations from all of us.
Three good reasons for booking now

Booking tickets in good time helps the festival in many ways, so now's the time to visit the box office:   whittingtonmusicfestival.littleboxoffice.com/browse
Why not encourage neighbours, friends and family to give us a try too, and make life easier for them by offering a lift to Whittington. This would be an especially kind gesture for someone near you who has mobility problems.
Easter is also the perfect time to buy tickets as gifts. After all, we know that the proven health benefits of listening to live music are many, and certainly greater and longer-lasting than a surfeit of chocolate!
