Diane Hinds

The Island Britain Bought - A talk by Diane M. Hinds in conjunction with Black History Month

Tuesday 3 November 2.30-3.30pm

Diane's debut novel, Conquerabia: The Struggle for Identity, tells the story of Trinidad from Christopher Columbus's arrival in 1498 to the island's cession from Spain to Britain in 1797. It follows the installation of Thomas Picton as the island's first British governor, the torture of thirteen-year-old Luisa Calderon under his authority, and the social upheaval that came with the approaching abolition of slavery. Caribbean history in Britain tends to be told through Jamaica and Haiti. Trinidad's story is different, and almost nobody here has heard it.
