New exhibition at Qube!
Louis Wain: (1860-1939) The Man Who Drew Cats
6th May to 13th June

Qube Gallery's eagerly anticipated exhibition, 'Louis Wain: The Man Who Drew Cats' is now open.

This exciting touring exhibition on loan from Bethlem Museum of the Mind tells the fascinating story of Louis Wain (1860 – 1939), an internationally acclaimed artist, through a selection of his original drawings and paintings.

Born in London, Wain began drawing humorous pictures of his cat to entertain his wife, Emily, who was seriously ill. She encouraged him to start selling his pictures and they began to appear in children's books, magazines, newspapers and in the artists own annuals, published 1901 – 1921.

Demand for Wain's drawings diminished during World War 1 leaving him increasingly impoverished. Eventually he was committed to a pauper's ward in a mental hospital until he was recognised by a hospital worker. A public appeal and support from the Prime Minister meant he was transferred to a private room at Bethlem Royal Hospital and then to Napsbury, where he was able to continue drawing his beloved cats.

Scarecrow day at Weston Lullingfields

Unfortunately I am not able to go to see the Scarecrows this year but I can highly recommend it for an afternoon out - on the doorstep.   There are two places you can stop for tea and the cakes are quite delicious.

You are invited to attend the above Annual Parish Meeting to find out what is happening in your community. Local community groups the public and press are welcome to attend. Parish electors are entitled to put forward resolutions and vote on local issues. The meeting is usually attended by your Shropshire Council Councillor, a police representative and will be chaired by Colin Case, Chairman of the Parish Council.

Seafood Bar & Fishmonger at Shrewsbury Market

Fishmonger celebrates refurbishment and expansion

 

Shropshire's largest independent fishmonger has undergone a £20,000 refurbishment allowing it to spoil seafood lovers with a greater choice of fresh UK caught fish than ever before.

 

Barkworths Seafoods, based in Shrewsbury Market Hall, has upgraded and expanded its retail counter and overhauled its catering kitchen where dishes are freshly prepared for its adjacent popular seafood bar.

 

Barkworths supplies 12 restaurants as far as Ludlow, including The Peach Tree and The Haughmond. Its own Saint Pierre Seafood Bar serves up the likes of Maldon oysters, lobster and classic dishes, including Ian's own recipes.

 

Barkworths has been supplying fresh fish to the people of Shrewsbury for over 100 years. At at one stage it operated its own trawlers. Ian bought the company from its previous owners in 1996 having worked there for eight years. A customer, who was impressed with his talent and knowledge, lent him the money.

Thanks from Beth but also thanks to everyone on the mailing list who
took pens and pencils to Karen at Cafe Eleven for Beth`s girls in Senegal.

I owe lots of people an absolutely huge thank you. Before my parents came out to visit me over the Easter holidays, they started a fantastic little appeal for pens and pencils which Charlotte and I needed for FAS JOM - the group of girls who do not have the opportunity to go to school.

The amount of donations was overwhelming. We were really touched when we saw my parents at the airport, carrying two whole suitcases full of pens, pencils, rulers, exercise books and maths equipment. I really can't thank you enough!

The girls have loved all of the new stationary, have found a new interest in learning and are really doing a brilliant job of it! They are understanding so much more in much less time! Thank you again to everybody who gave.

Just to show you how your donations are being used, here are a few photos of the girls. More to follow I promise but they tend to get a little distracted if we get the camera out!
