STOKER (18)
Saturday 8th June  7:30pm

Legendary South Korean film-maker Park Chan-Wook (director of the cult classic Oldboy) makes his English language debut with this darkly twisted Gothic family horror story inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's 1943 thriller 'Shadow Of A Doubt'.

When India Stoker's father dies in a tragic accident her world takes on a strange and subversive twist with the arrival of an uncle she never knew existed.

"Stoker is strange, beautiful, stylish and at times wilfully confounding, but it’s also like nothing else out there at the moment." **** The Scotsman

I'm So Excited!  (15)
Saturday 15th June  7:30pm

Spanish with English sub titles

He's one of cinema's most visionary directors, and his films have shaped the way we see his country. So how does Pedro Almodóvar choose to portray Spain's catastrophic economic crisis? With an outrageous, sex-sozzled farce.

A technical failure has endangered the lives of the people on board Peninsula Flight 2549. The pilots are striving, along with their colleagues in the Control Center, to find a solution. The flight attendants and the chief steward are atypical, baroque characters who, in the face of danger, try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers, while they wait for a solution.

Camp, kitsch and deliciously entertaining, cult Spanish director Pedro Almodovar heads back to his wilder comedy roots with I'm So Excited!, a bright, breezy and frothy aircraft-set comedy..

Glyndebourne Summer Festival: Falstaff

Giuseppi Verdi

(recorded live at Glyndebourne 2009)

Screening   6:15pm

Composer:

Giuseppe Verdi

Librettist:

Arrigo Boito after the play by William Shakespeare

Conductor:

Director:

Richard Jones

Cast:

Christopher Purves, Tassis Christoyannis, Dina Kuznetsova, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Jennifer Holloway, Bülent Bezdüz, Adriana Kučerová

Run Time:

185 mins

Throughout his long career, Verdi longed to find a good subject for a comic opera. Towards the very end of it he found that subject, in the vast and jovial shape of Shakespeare’s John Falstaff.

The result is indeed a triumph, and joyously life-affirming. This revival of the production by Richard Jones, first seen at Glyndebourne in 2009, places the action firmly in Windsor with recognisably English characters.

‘It’s a clever conceit,’ said The Observer, ‘brilliantly executed by the designer Ultz, whose sharp eye for detail, authentic and witty, is part of the charm.’

The Great Gatsby (12A)  2D
Wednesday 19th June Market Day Matinee 1:00pm
Saturday 22nd June  7:30pm

This month we will host two screenings of the latest spectacular from Baz Lurhmann, director of cult classic 'Strictly Ballroom', 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Moulin Rouge'.

Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby' based on thje classic American novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings.

Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Academy Award® nominee DiCaprio (“Blood Diamond,” “Aviator”) plays Jay Gatsby, with Tobey Maguire starring as Nick Carraway; Joel Edgerton and Oscar® nominee Carey Mulligan (“An Education”) as Tom and Daisy Buchanan

“In The Great Gatsby, style meets substance head-on to bring audiences a triumphant cinematic experience. “ - Get Reading
