Mid Wales Opera

Join Mid Wales Opera in the unique centenary celebrations of Benjamin Britten's birth by having supper and enjoying a recital on Wednesday 4 September 6:30pm.

Hailed by the Daily Telegraph as a "voice of real distinction", brilliant tenor Nicky Spence and Royal Harpist, Hannah Stone will perform a recital in two parts with supper hosted by Michael Berkeley - composer, broadcaster and godson of Benjamin Britten.

The programme includes Britten's A Hymn on Divine Music, A Birthday Hansel and Canticle V, Suite for Harp, items from a historic recital attended by Britten himself in the historic music room at Gregynog, with Wessex Graves, a song cycle by Michael Berkeley, your host for the evening.

Tickets are £45 including a two course meal and coffee and are available by emailing here

The evening is part of a wider residential programme between 4-6 September, "Benjamin Britten-Opera Genius" where visitors are given the opportunity to stay at Gregynog and learn more about the composer from Mid Wales Opera Artistic Director Nicholas Cleobury, Britten biographer Paul Kildea and Michael McCarthy joint Artistic Director of Music Theatre Wales.

Tickets at £195 include all meals, two nights' accommodation and a trip to the premiere of MWO's new production Albert Herring at Theatr Hafren, Newtown.

More details are available here and the full programme here or from gregynog@wales.ac.uk / 01686 650224

How do you fancy starting a B&B business?

I have been running Brownhill House as a B&B for 34 years (I actually started helping my gran in about 1953!)  In those days there were no grants but today there is MONEY to help you set up a business.

I would love to pass on the highs and lows of running a B&B and now you can get MONEY to help you get started.  Go on, go for it - it beats working for a living!

Message from Colin

This page has information regarding grants for B&Bs in the Oswestry area. Not sure how far that extends
http://shropshire.gov.uk/news/2013/08/funding-available-for-bed-and-breakfast-businesses-in-oswestry/

Anyway, might be useful

NOT spreading hay in the Bridge Field

As you might have suspected the hay has not been cut this week. I have been told by the contractor that they hope to cut early next week if the weather is good. So maybe Tuesday or Wednesday??

Broadband coming to Baschurch?

Message from Colin Case

I think some people in Baschurch are being connected? I have seen a few "fibre" Openreach vans at people's houses? Anyone confirm?

It is hopelessly late compared to original schedules, but have you seen how lucky we are?
This map ( http://connectingshropshire.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/finalmapwithlegend.png ) shows the expected deployment around Shropshire in the Shropshire Council roll-out.
We are surrounded by "seeks extra funding" and "2015"
Thank heavens for our Race to Infinity win.
Thanks again to everyone who voted back in 2010

WOW - The Ruyton XI Towns mailing list goes international!!!

Message from Colin Case

Yo,

As you know, when you publish an email round your system a copy is lodged automatically on your blog here:-
http://yo-emails.blogspot.co.uk/

You might like to know that this Blog has been visited over 20,000 times over the year - an amazing hit-rate.   You are obviously doing SOMETHING right! Super job, keep it up.

And a few more stats from Colin:

20,000 page hists - about 100 a day.

Over half are from USA (?) with the rest nearly all UK, but some from Germany, South Korea and nearly everywhere else.   Can't track how many are really local.

Two-thirds use the Chrome Browser - most of the rest are Internet Explorer, except for about 10% which are from Tablets (about half iPads and the rest Androids)

That's a pretty impressive hit rate - puts your page in the top 10,000 pages on Blogger - amazing considering how many blogs there are on this free world-wide service - there must be millions.

Walk in Nail Bar in Shrewsbury Market Hall

Yet another new stall in Shrewsbury Market Hall

Walk-in Nail Bar opens at Market Hall

Shrewsbury Market Hall now has its very own walk-in nail bar, launched by qualified nail technician Christine Charles-Harland.

Calypso Nails offers a variety of treatments including long-lasting gel polish and French manicures and pedicures.

Christine is no new-comer to the market hall. She previously ran the cosmetics business Cheeky Charlie’s which she set up in 2011 with her husband Neil Harland.

“I’ve always loved colours and textures and the nail bar is a dream come true for me,” she said.

“It’s a relaxing little haven for people to get away from their busy lives. Many of my manicures and pedicures include lower leg or arm massage so it’s a place they can come for a bit of pampering and ‘me’ time.”

Christine said she was also passionate about the market hall as a great shopping destination in the heart of Shrewsbury.

“It’s a gem of a place. I used to live in London and it reminds me of a mini Portobello which remains one of my favourite markets in the UK,” she said.

For inquiries or to book an appointment contact Christine on 07974 441257 or calypsonails@gmail.com

Hay spreading at Bridge Inn Field

Message from Clive Dean, Shropshire Greenspace Officer

I have been told that they are hoping to cut the hay in the Ironbridge Gorge later this week and that we should get our delivery of flower rich hay to Bridge Inn fields in the latter half of the week.

As soon as I know I will email people to come and help spread the hay so that the wildflower seed can fall and increase the variety of flowers we have.

My plan will be to invite people from 4pm onward to join in.

 Please spread the message
