Special Summer gardens open for National Gardens Scheme The are four special gardens open for the NGS in Shropshire over the next 7-10 days, supporting cancer and nursing charities such as Macmillan, Marie Curie and Hospices UK. Hodnet Hall gardens: At Hodnet, near Market Drayton. Impressive 60 acre landscaped garden, usually open to the public, but Sunday 12th June is a special opening day for the NGS. Open 12-5pm for visitors to admire the series of lakes and pools, magnificent forest trees and a great variety of flowers and shrubs. Extensive kitchen garden plus unique collection of big-game trophies in the 17th century tea rooms. Accessible paths around the gardens for wheelchairs; dogs on leads welcome. Admission £6.50 for adults, £3 for children. Refreshments available. Morville Hall gardens: Morville, near Bridgnorth. Open on Sunday 12th June (2-5pm), an interesting group of gardens that surround a beautiful Grade 1 listed mansion; six separate gardens to visit in total including the famous Dower House with its historical gardens through the ages including a cloister garden, Elizabethan knot garden and Edwardian kitchen and rose garden at the height of its beauty; pretty cottage gardens at the two Gate Houses and a lovely walled garden at The Cottage; new designs at The South Pavilion's courtyard garden plus 4-acres of garden at Morville Hall itself with parterre, colourful borders and glorious views over the Mor Valley. Admission is £5 for access to all the gardens, free for children, proceeds to NGS charities. Homemade teas served in Morville Church (proceeds to the church). Wollaston Lodge: Wollaston, Halfway (8 miles from Shrewsbury, 8 miles from Welshpool on A458). Open on Sunday 12th June (11.30-5pm). This Italianate-style garden opened with much interest for the first time in 2015 and continues to delight visitors. Classic, formal style gardens with terraces and ornamental pools and fountains. Plenty of places to sit in the sun and take in the far-reaching views across the Welsh hills. Refreshments and plants for sale. Well-behaved dogs welcome. Admission £4 for adults, free for children. Award-winning B&B. Goldstone Hall gardens: Goldstone, near Market Drayton. Open on Wednesday 15th June (2-5pm); Mature 5 acres of gardens surround this well-known Shropshire hotel. Delightful double herbaceous border at the height of its early summer beauty – full of colour, scent and form. Extensive kitchen garden, herbal walkway covering an acre and attracting large numbers of bees and butterflies. Rose borders looking their best in June. Most parts of the garden can be accessed by wheelchair. Afternoon teas served in the elegant oak pavilion in the garden. Admission £4.50 for adults, free for children. Visitors to NGS gardens will have the pleasure of knowing that their entrance fee is supporting many vital cancer and nursing charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospices UK and the Carers Trust. The Scheme also supports Parkinson's UK and, for the first time this year, the MS Society. Earlier this year, the National Gardens Scheme gave £2.73 to the charities it supports from monies raised in 2015.
