ELEANOR HARRIS & HER SCHOOLS IN BASCHURCH PARISH - A Lasting Legacy By Jessie Hanson
Jessie is a 91 year old authority on local history and, having been a teacher in the area for many years, there is not much she does not know about us.
This little book covers the history of the Harris family of Boreatton Hall where Eleanor grew up and her lasting gift to the villages of Weston Lullingfields and Baschurch. Thanks to her legacy, these schools were established nearly a 100 years before Ruyton could boast an educational establishment.
Eleanor left a very long list of how the schools (boys & girls establishments) were to be run with a group of local worthies to be the trustees to oversee her wishes.
The children were each issued with a complete set of clothes every 12 months, made distinctive to show where they went to school. At the end of their schooling, the children were issued with a set of clothes, the boys, and some girls, apprentice to learn a trade, other girls went into service.
This would be a great book to read with your child, especially if he or she is at Baschurch or Weston School.
