LOCAL HISTORY BLOG - 6. James Cowper, Local historian

Hi Everyone,

The last history blog, James Cowper, village Schoolmaster, by Irena
White was about his family and working history.

This story is about James` amazing recording of the local history of our
village, which he gleaned by talking to old people and his own following
up of their stories.

One thing which has puzzled Margaret Lycett, Irena White and I has been
the different spelling of James` surname. Margaret and Irena always
referred to him as Cowper, from the school and their family history
research but I always called him James Cooper as that is how Robert
Lloyd Kenyon referred to the schoolmaster in the Shropshire
Archaelogical Transactions.

Thanks to the Blessed Google, I was able to find that Cowper was often
prounced as KU, as in William Cowper, the 18th century poet and
hymnist. Also, it was perhaps a similar to Shrosebury/Shewsbury - posh
people said Cooper, but normal people said Cowper!

Enjoy James and his remarkable collection of local history tales - and
perhaps it will encourage you to write down the tales you have grown up
with.
