SUMMER OPEN EXHIBITION PART 2
August 19 - September 16
This year's Summer Exhibition has been split into two shows, with the second part running until Saturday September 16. The exhibition includes work in oils, watercolours, acrylic, woodcuts, collagraphs, photography and beautiful pen-and-ink drawings. We are also delighted to have a range of prints for sale at the Gallery.

Highlights of the show include a series of artworks by Sally-Ann Davies, amongst which you can experience the grandeur and beauty of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake. Sally-Ann will also be running a woodcut printing workshop in September (see below).

A Brighter Day
Oil
Artist: Harry Brioche

The Gallery is pleased and proud to exhibit the works of acclaimed artist Harry Brioche. Harry's landscapes, an extraordinary mix of light and air, open spaces and vast skies, hang in art collections worldwide.
Dappled Light
Pen & ink [from Black on White Collection]
Artist: Kay Boyce

Shropshire-based Kay is widely known for her exquisite figurative work, often incorporating elements of dance. Recently striking in a new direction, she has been working in the medium of pen-and-ink to produce in intricate detail a collection of remarkable drawings inspired by her love of trees and architecture.

Fire in the Sky
Acrylic on canvas
Artist: David Bannister

David depicts landscape with elements of abstraction and a forceful sense of weather, season and light.
David also paints memorable portraits using bold colours and dramatic angles, and is an accomplished animal portraitist. Acrylic and mixed media are currently the major components of his work.

Whispering Water

Artist: Eileen Harrisson
'I rejoice in the patterns of rocks, in depicting waves as they swell to the rhythms of the tides and break in gentle foam to the sand of the shore.' Mixed-media textile artist Eileen's building blocks include acrylic paint on cotton, painted silk fabrics including mulberry bark, inkjet printing, silk and cotton threads, machine embroidery and hand stitching.
See all 26 original artworks, a celebration of local art, each letter of the alphabet paying tribute to Oswestry, its history, culture and curiosities. We also have A to Z Postcards for sale plus whacky A to Z Map that pinpoints all the places, people and events portrayed in the artworks (colour-in version of the map especially for kids)... Just go exploring!
P is for Barbara Pym
[1913-1980]
Acrylic on paper
Artist: Peter Edwards

Previously not for sale but now available for purchase, coinciding with a revival of interest in this subtle, accomplished novelist

Born in Oswestry in 1913 and privately educated, Pym was a best-selling novelist who, like her idol Jane Austen, wrote comedies of manners, but often tinged with sadness, modelling her characters upon people she knew. She was also one of the first popular novelists to write about gay relationships. Quartet in Autumn, securing a Booker short-listing, is perhaps her best work. She was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was a castaway on Desert Island Discs.
Portrait artist Peter Edwards has six works in the National Portrait Gallery, including portraits of Seamus Heaney, Kazuo Ishiguro and, his own childhood hero, Bobby Charlton. He has painted Ryan Giggs for the National Library of Wales; other works include likenesses of Michael Winner, Willy Russell and Carol Ann Duffy. Locally, a fine portrait of consultant spinal surgeon Mr David Jaffray hangs in the lecture theatre at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital.

R is for Racecourse
Acrylic & mixed media on canvas
Artist: Gill Crozier

The historic racecourse was used to socialise and race horses. Located on a 300m hilltop, it is now an area of common land and a well-trodden walking route, with Offa's Dye passing through it.
Living in Shropshire for many years, painter Gill Crozier is drawn to the structure of landscape and overlay of human presence. Her work is mostly mixed-media, using a mix of acrylics and ink. Her aim in Racecourseshe says, was to capture 'the high green openness and ghostly sound of horses' hooves pounding the earth'.
Y is for Youth of Oswestry
Artist: Sofiya Kudryavsteva
Acrylic on canvas

'In the painting I used overly bright and contrasting colours. I attempted to keep it quite simplistic, so I neglected shading. I changed the original colours, mainly for the sake of aesthetics, but also because I wanted it to look not serious, but rather whimsical.'

'In the painting I used overly bright and contrasting colours. I attempted to keep it quite simplistic, so I neglected shading. I changed the original colours, mainly for the sake of aesthetics, but also because I wanted it to look not serious, but rather whimsical.'

'In the painting I used overly bright and contrasting colours. I attempted to keep it quite simplistic, so I neglected shading. I changed the original colours, mainly for the sake of aesthetics, but also because I wanted it to look not serious, but rather whimsical.'
