The counterintuitive behaviour is the result of constant vertical vibrations that change the forces acting on the floating object. The effect finds the vessels apparently defying gravity. The observations made by researchers in Paris defy Archimedes' principle, in which the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces. The discovery could open up new avenues for study and have future practical applications such as removing plastic particles from liquids. The effect is reminiscent of an eerie scene from the film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, when Captain Jack Sparrow's Black Pearl is tipped upside down; also an optical-illusion installation, Swimming Pool, by conceptual artist Leandro Erlich at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan. | | Tel: 01691 657575 email: willowgalleryoswestry.gmail.com Website: willowgalleryoswestry.org Facebook: Willow Address: 56 Willow Street, Oswestry, Shropshire SY11 1AD The gallery is open to the public with social distancing measures in place Masks/face coverings are required Gallery & café open: Tues-Sat 10am-3pm Closed: Sundays/Mondays/Bank Holidays Editor: Hilary Moorcroft October 2020 | | |
