Bedroom items, free to a good home

Message from Ros Slowley.

2 items free to someone to collect from Ruyton XI Towns:  (measurements approximate)

1.  Wooden chest of drawers - approx 84cm (2' 9") tall, 82cm (2' 8") wide, 38cm (1' 3") deep , with 6 drawers (2 at the top) - needs re-assembling and a little work to get the drawers to open and close smoothly.

2.  Wooden slatted single bed - 90cm (3') wide BUT only 180cm (5' 11") long - we cut off about 18cm (7") so that it fitted across a small room; there is a mattress cut down in size to fit but it's old! Bed will need re-assembling!

`Yer tiz`, as we say in Dorset, Local History Society poster

I obviously sent this message too late last night, giving `hundreds` of people time to tell me I had forgotten to attach the Local History poster - well, three people actually.

Very sorry,

Yoland

Thank you!

Booka Bookshop event news

Message from Booka Bookshop.

Booka Bookshop Presents...

Join us for an evening in the company of Lucy Easthope as she talks about her inspiring new memoir When the Dust Settles: Stories of Love, Loss and Hope from an Expert in Disaster.

Lucy Easthope lives with disaster every day. When a plane crashes, a bomb explodes, a city floods or a pandemic begins, she's the one they call.

Lucy is a world-leading authority on recovering from disaster. She has been at the centre of the most seismic events of the last few decades, advising on everything from the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami to the 7/7 bombings, the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand, the Grenfell fire and the Covid-19 pandemic. In every catastrophe, Lucy is there to pick up the pieces and prepare for the next one. She holds governments to account, helps communities rally together, returns personal possessions to families, and holds the hands of the survivors.

In her moving memoir she reveals what happens in the aftermath and explores how we pick up and rebuild with strength and perseverance. She takes us behind the police tape to scenes of destruction and chaos, introducing us to victims and their families, but also to the government briefing rooms and bunkers, where confusion and stale biscuits can reign supreme. Telling her own personal story, Lucy looks back at a life spent on the edges of disaster, from a Liverpudlian childhood steeped in the Hillsborough tragedy to the many losses and loves of her career.

With wisdom, resilience and candour, When the Dust Settles lifts us up by showing that humanity, hope and humour can – and must – be found on the darkest days.

Textile art inspired by nature

Local textile artist and stitch storyteller Suzette Smart will be in the gallery this coming Saturday (10am to 3pm) with her sewing machine and a selection of her fantastical  textile pieces to chat about her work and making process
Free event
About Suzette
I'm a textile artist and tutor living in a rural hamlet in North Shropshire. The natural world outside my door as well as familiar journeys along the towpath close by are my greatest source of inspiration for stitching and storytelling.

I'm not a light stitcher and never manage to tell all in the first layer, but prefer to build a story through collage, thread and a little mixed media. My work often includes hidden histories in the inherited or found fabrics and re-purposed embroideries I choose to use for collage and sometimes as my foundation layer. I mainly use free machine, but the finishing stitches are often by hand.
