Sunday 10th December. 2:00pm (Subtitled for the Hard Of Hearing)

Nic Cage stars as hapless family man Paul Matthews who finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. But when his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom, in this wickedly entertaining comedy from writer-director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself) and producer Ari Aster.

College biology professor Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage) lives a decidedly quiet, unremarkable life – despite being settled with a family, he is constantly overlooked when the invites are sent for esteemed colleagues' dinner evenings. Everything changes, however, when he becomes the most famous man in the world – after inexplicably showing up as a mysterious bystander in the dreams of people across the world.

A cynical ad agency, led by Michael Cera, soon reach out to capitalise on his newfound viral celebrity status, further complicating Paul's rapidly spiralling life, as he sets out to make sense of the bizarre globe-spanning phenomenon. A thrillingly comedic send up of cancel culture, and a gloriously inventive satire on the pitfalls of fame and the cult of celebrity, this whip-smart showcase for the multi-faceted acting talents of the inimitable Nicolas Cage is a twisting, playfully genre-hopping creative collaboration between director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself) and producer Ari Aster (Hereditary).

The Taste Of Things (12A)

Thursday 14th December  7:30pm

Our closing film for the festival is this mouthwatering and sensual exercise in haute cuisine and late-flowering romance set in 1885 and almost totally within the confines of a rustic kitchen in a chateau.

Tr?n Anh Hùng, the Vietnamese director, now living in France, of The Scent of the Green Papaya based the film on the book The Life and Passion of Dodin-Bouffant, Gourmet by Marcel Rouff.

Peerless cook Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) has worked for the famous gourmet Dodin (Benoît Magimel) for the last 20 years. As time went by, the practice of gastronomy and mutual admiration turned into a romantic relationship. He realises, however, that while he schmoozes the rich and famous in the dining room, she remains in the kitchen but is clearly hugely responsible for his august reputation. There is talk of marriage but Eugénie values her independence too much in a relationship that she considers should be of equal parts.

Both Binoche and Magimel who were together in life for a considerable time, exude an effortless rapport. Chosen as France's Oscar contender.

Director Tr?n Anh Hùng
Cast Juliette Binoche, Benoît Magimel, Emmanuel Salinger, Patrick D'Assumçao

My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock (15) + Q&A With Alistair McGowan
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 12th December 7:00pm
? (4 tickets available at the point of publication)

Please note the film starts at 7:00pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

An extra showing from the Oswestry Film Society - note 7pm start for this event.

In this critically acclaimed new film, the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock supposedly narrates from beyond the grave, using movie clips to reveal techniques and meanings in his work.

But the script is actually voiced by the comic impressionist Alistair McGowan, whose vocal copying of one of the most influential directors of all time is so eerily good that you'd think Hitchcock had been summoned up in some ghostly seance session.

In a career spanning six decades, many of his almost 60 films are still widely watched and studied today.

As Hitchcock seemingly rewatches his own films, we are taken on a journey through his vast career – his vivid silent films, his 1930s and wartime movies, the legendary films of the 1950s and 60s, and all his later works – in playful and revealing ways.

The Oswestry Film Society is thrilled not only to stage this special showing of MY NAME IS ALFRED HITCHCOCK, but also that Alistair McGowan has agreed to come to the OFS as our special guest to talk afterwards about the film, its making, and the influence of Hitchcock himself.

Please support us in this special venture.

Run Time: 2 hours + post screening discussion
