They stood out because the colour vibrated against a uniform field. I cut out the poppy shapes on masking tape and stuck them down onto Yupo plastic paper. After wetting the paper, I dropped in Cascade Green and Green Gold and let them run and blend together. While still wet, I used granulation medium from a pipette to cause a grainy effect when the pigments separate. Once dry, I peeled away the masking tape and painted the poppies red. The diagonal at the top was painted Perylene Green with a little Green Gold added. While still wet, I drew in trees using a water-soluble pencil. This was one of those paintings that took me in a different direction to the one I was planning. I was glad it did! | | | Upcoming Autumn Exhibition Saturday 6 September–Saturday 25 October Collections by Georgina Shepherd & Julie Price Sylvia Stead Marches Independent Photography Group | | Art & Craft Workshops at the Gallery We offer a wide range of artist-led workshops that allow you to develop your creative practice or just enjoy a creative day out. The third of a trilogy of novels and representing a personal milestone for Ron, Meetings & Partings explores the themes of love, loss and human vulnerability. Ron was joined by fellow-writer John Heap to talk about the background to the book and the challenges of weaving historical facts into a fictional account. Readings by Bernard Pearson, Kirstie Edwards, Vicky Turrell and Trixie Roberts were at the heart of the launch, leaving the audience wanting more. Afterwards, guests mingled and were able to take home signed copies of the new work. Retired headteacher Ron has been writing in one form or another since college days, and over the years has published plays, poems and novels. LEFT: Ron and family at the launch of Meetings & Partings Meetings & Partings is published by local co-operative Leaf by Leaf Press, of which Ron is one of the founding members. Wicked Harvest, the first book in the trilogy (published by Pegasus) was followed by The Stolen Valley (publishers Leaf by Leaf). The trilogy can also be read as three individual works, and all three are available from Amazon. Great job, Ron - Congratulations! | | | Other local events & information | | Click here for Summer Services timetable and here for tickets | | | Repair Café Oswestry & Borders Llanfyllin Public Institute Saturday 12 July, 12-3pm Bin it? More than 1000 paintings are now on show, including new acquisitions and loans. The works are still hung in a primarily chronological arrangement, starting with medieval art through to the 20th century, but the new display will also place some works in an 'artists-looking-at-artists' format to show how they were inspired by their predecessors. Other thematic, non-chronological rooms explore subjects like still life as practiced across different periods and cultures, while others highlight specific artistic materials such as pastel and gold. | | A vibrant, not-for-profit art space packed full of contemporary artworks from local and national artists.
