BORDERLAND VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION
& OPEN STUDIOS ART TRAIL

Borderland Visual Arts was established back in the late 1990s to provide a network for practicing artists living in and around Oswestry. There are currently over 70 members working in a range of art disciplines, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, metalwork, ceramics and textiles. This year, 41 BVA members have work on display at the gallery, with regular Meet the Artist sessions being posted on our Facebook

Pictured right: At our Open Evening on Saturday 2 May, art sales included Graeme Storey's East Mouse Island (its location just off the north coast of Anglesey, close to the town of Amlwch).

A Way of Seeing with Reg Turrell

Long Gone

I am attracted to abandoned rural buildings by the way they disintegrate and become part of the landscape. They are often built using nearby local materials. Once these start to age, they become colonised by lichens, mosses and other plants: these all help to blend the building into the countryside.
To start this painting, I used pieces of an old Ordnance Survey map, stuck down to suggest the background of green fields. The graphic representation of landscape placed the building amongst its surrounding. I used gesso to create texture for the foreground and stone walls. This also helped to blend the map with the rest of the painting. For the deteriorating iron roof, I glued pieces of corrugated card. To suggest crumbling stone walls, burnt umber acrylic ink and oil pastel was applied. To add some detail, ink intense pencils were used for timber struts. Scratching into the pastel added some detail to the stonework.

I'm still experimenting with the techniques of collage, and very much enjoy exploring this great medium - particularly how well it lends itself to creative expression and story-telling.
