Booka Bookshop Presents... Saturday 11th March 2023, 7.30pm (doors 6.45pm) at The Holroyd Community Theatre, Oswestry, SY10 7SZ Join us for An Evening with Anton Du Beke, the King of the Ballroom and Strictly Come Dancing Royalty, as he talks about his new novel The Royal Show. In 2018 Anton realised a boyhood dream and published the first in a series of bestselling novels. He returns in 2023 with The Royal Show, the first in a brand new series. Prodigal son and loyal daughter… The Forsyth Variety Company has been given the opportunity of a lifetime – to entertain Her Majesty at 1962's Royal Variety Performance. Keen to rehearse, the company heads to the Seagate Theatre under the tutelage of the company's owner, Ed Forsyth. This is Ed's last hoorah before retiring and he's keen to leave on a high. But his son, Cal, has absconded, leaving his twin sister, Evie, to help manage the company after their mother's death. Hoping to display her best trapeze performance ever, she's also desperate that the entire troupe should succeed. If only her father hadn't brought in another old-timer… Billy Rich has come all the way from Hollywood, invited to be their main star. Billy is full of bluster and ego and his much younger wife, the mysterious Magdalene, doesn't help. Can this troupe of old-time crooners, dancing girls and magicians possibly pull this off? Especially when they must compete with the 1960's rebellious new bands and revolutionary music? Abandoned by her brother, Evie has no idea if she'll ever be able to wrestle the troupe into a show fit for a queen. But as the theatrical group heads towards a royal deadline like no other, Cal returns out of the blue to introduce a song that could change the world. Is he here to help, or are his motivations darker? As the company descends into illicit romance, family intrigue and foul crimes, rehearsals begin to unravel. Can they really do this? Cal thinks he has the answer, if only the troupe can believe in him. Kids go free* to The Mill exhibition this February half term Join us at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings where kids go free into The Mill exhibition this February half term!  You can also enjoy a free family-friendly trail and playground games across the site.   During your visit inside The Mill exhibition, learn about the history of the site by following a family trail, featuring exhibition cats Flax and Barley.  You can play and create using the building blocks, try on authentic apprentice children's costumes, and be the first to try out the brand new snakes and ladders board game that's based on the Main Mill.  Our activities are aimed at ages 4-14.  Kids go free offer runs from Saturday 18 February to Sunday 26 February 2023. The next session is on Saturday 4 February. These sessions are for anyone who would appreciate a calmer visit, including visitors living with autism, dementia and learning difficulties and/or sensory needs, and their families, friends, companions or carers. The Mill exhibition capacity is reduced to allow for a calmer environment, audio is lowered and our team is able to provide a more informal and responsive service to support you as best as possible. COMING EVENTS AT THE LIBRARY IN MARCH - you are never alone with a library

Oswestry Family & Local History Group

Every Monday 10-12 noon - Every Friday 1.30-4pm

Oswestry Family and Local History volunteers run a twice-weekly advice service at Oswestry Library. Teams of trained, knowledgeable volunteers work alongside library staff to help both newcomers and experienced researchers to get the most from the expanded range of resources available.

No booking required, just drop in. 

 Digital Support Weekly Drop In Session

Every Monday afternoon, starting Mon 13 Feb 2023 1-3pm

Join us at the library for a new weekly 'Drop-In' session for digital troubleshooting. If you could use some support with your device or a particular digital task that's giving you trouble, drop in to see us. Library staff and volunteers will be on hand to support with your query, and we encourage people to stay for a cup of tea and share your learning with others. NB: Library staff and digital volunteers cannot support with online banking queries. For these, you must contact your bank.

Free - No need to book. Open to all ages and abilities. Just come along and bring your device. If you feel you could provide help to others as a Digital volunteer, please contact us, we're keen for all the help we can get!

If you are over 65 years of age and seeking support to learn digital skills from scratch, contact us and we can refer you onto the waiting list for our 10 week course to get you started.

 Shared Sounds Sessions

Sat 1, 18 & 25 March 1-2.30pm

Delivered by the Shropshire Music Education Hub, in partnership with Shropshire Libraries. Musical workshops for children with disabilities and their families. Predominantly aimed at 3-7 year olds, led by Shropshire Music Service professionals. Participants and their families will be able to listen to live music, help create music by singing/playing instruments, and interact with music physically in whatever way they choose.

Sessions will be informal and will adapt to the needs of the children involved.  Siblings welcome.

Writing as Therapy, with Dave Andrews

Wed 1 March & Thu 16 March 10-12noon

Writing is an excellent way of celebrating the good things in life and also coming to terms with setbacks. Whether it's keeping a diary, writing a poem or a story or even a letter to yourself, writing is a way of expressing and externalizing feelings. I speak from experience as someone who kept diaries and wrote poems during tough times - and good times! If you would like to explore the idea of writing as therapy, please come along to one of my sessions.

Join us for a monthly session of reading aloud for adults. Simply relax with a cup of tea as staff and volunteers read aloud a selection of poems and stories on a given theme each month.

Language Café

If you have an interest in foreign languages and would like to share your passion with like-minded people in an informal and relaxed environment, join our Language Café! Second Wednesday of every month. Organised by local linguist Ewa Corser from 'Word of Mouth Languages'. Coffee and tea provided (small donations welcomed).

Singing for Memories

Wed 15 March 11-12noon

Join staff for an informal hour at the library to sing favourites from the '50s, '60s and '70s. Feel memories flooding back and spirits lifting!  Everyone can sing - suitable for all, especially those with some memory loss

We are delighted to be welcoming the Shropshire Dungeon Master back for more Saturdays at the library filled with magic and adventure! New players welcome, no experience required. Under 16s game in the morning, over 16s in the afternoon.

Hearing Loss Support Hubs

Usually 1^st Wednesday every month

Hearing aid support Hub run by NHS trained volunteers. Usually the first Wednesday of every month. Battery changes and hearing aid cleaning.

Booking is now essential for this, please contact the Hearing Loss Support Service on 01743 342168 or email shls@community-resource.org.uk to confirm dates and make an appointment.

Carer's Support Drop in

Did you know that there is an open Carer's Support Drop in at the library, usually on the fourth Thursday of every month? If you are a carer for someone you can seek support and advice from Shropshire Council's Carer Support team here. You do not need to book, just come along.
