The speaker Graham Fuller from a firm of Shrewsbury solicitors was the speaker at WI last night. He was brilliant; shattered some myths, explained later life planning, protecting assets from the care system, Lasting Powers of Attorney, wills etc. There was so much to take in, and he cheerfully stood there whilst he was bombarded with questions, answered everyone with good-humoured care – the members did not want to let him go. There will be a lot of people who thought they had it all under control, now re-visiting their arrangements! Never too early to think about these things, preferably whilst one is young, fit and able to talk about the without fear.

The Rural Services Network in partnership with the Citizens Advice is running a Rural Cost of Living Household Survey. The survey closes on 31 March 2023. So far the RSN have had 3000 responses, which is fantastic but want to encourage more, especially from hard to reach rural residents, i.e. those without access to the internet or the capacity to engage with services online. Research commissioned by the RSN last year shows rural areas are suffering more acutely from the rise in the cost of living compared to urban areas. The purpose of the survey is to understand more about rural household budgets at, what is, a very difficult time for many. Results from the survey will help us to engage more effectively with Government Departments, MPs and other policy makers. Please share the survey with all your contacts, networks, family and friends living in rural areas – the greater the response the better. If you can assist those who do not have access to the internet to complete the survey this would also be much appreciated. Please note the survey closes on 31 March 2023. The Rural Services Network seeks to provide a voice for rural communities by representing rural services, networking between rural service organisations and establishing and broadcasting best practice in rural service provision. It comprises SPARSE Rural, the Rural Assembly, the wider Rural Services Partnership and the RSN Community Group. The organisation works with Rural England, a stand-alone CIC research group. NGS Gardens open to see massed snowdrops

This is the time to see snowdrops at their most prolific, mostly in stately home woodlands, but here at Brownhill House, the little bulbs multiply like Topsy - or weeds!

If you would handful of snowdrop bulbs, somewhere around 30, let me know and I will dig some up for you - donation to the NGS.

Welcome to a new year of open gardens.  We start with a snowdrop opening at MILLICHOPE PARK, Munslow, Shropshire, SY7 9HA, on Sunday 19th February, from 2 pm - 5 pm.  8m NE of Craven Arms.off B4368 Craven Arms to Bridgnorth Rd. Nr Munslow then follow yellow signs.. Admission £6, children free.  Dogs on leads welcome. Regret no refreshments are available.   The historic landscape gardens at Millichope cover 14 acres with lakes and cascades dating from C18, woodland walks and wildflowers. The pleasure grounds feature many specimen trees and views into the surrounding parkland and the Clee Hill. Snowdrops carpeting the woodland create a wonderful sight.   Although some of our gardens take payment by card reader. it is often difficult to connect to 4G or Wifi in rural areas, so please have cash available.   Another date for your diary On Wednesday 29th March the garden at the HUNDRED HOUSE HOTEL, Norton, Telford, TF11 9EE will open for the first time for the National Garden Scheme, from 10 am to 5 pm. Based on the largest collection of queer love letters discovered by Mark Hignett, curator of Oswestry Town Museum.  The letters are from an Oswestry man and his lover in WWII and The Letter Men is a window into the untold true story of two gay men desperately in love but torn apart by war.

While on military training during World War Two, Gilbert Bradley exchanged hundreds of letters with his sweetheart - who merely signed with the initial "G". But more than 70 years later, a small town museum curator who was collecting historical letters associated with the town of Oswestry discovered that G stood for Gordon, and Gilbert had been in love with a man. These letters now represent the largest known collection of LGBTQ+ love letters from that era.

The Letter Men is based on the real love letters written by Gordon Bowsher to his sweetheart, Gilbert Bradley. Their love letters were exchanged between the years of 1938 and 1941 and uncovered in 2015. Using the actual text of the letters, The Letter Men transports us directly into the places of the letters and their heart--battlefields, air raid shelters, and lost, golden moments.

There will be after screening Q&A Oswestry Town Museum curator Mark Hignett who discovered the letters.
