STAFF PLAN TO CLEAN UP AT CHARITY COFFEE MORNING - Friday 26th September
A SHREWSBURY shopping centre team are hoping to brew up a stack of cash by taking part in a global coffee morning fundraiser.
One of those from the group at the Pride Hill, Riverside and Darwin shopping centres in Shrewsbury who will be there on his day off to support the Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning on Friday (September 26) will be security supervisor Phil Rowley.
He said: “It is something that means a lot to me personally because of relatives I have lost through cancer. I have lost two uncles in the last three years and I know that both times the Macmillan nurses have been absolutely fantastic.
“The support they gave to my family has just been great and there have been times when I know some people would not have coped without them.”
Hoping to give as much back to the charity, Phil, 51, will be getting stuck in on Friday to help along with representatives from some of the 75 stores at the shopping centre.
He said: “It’s actually my day off but I’ll be here getting involved in whatever way I can. We’ve been advertising it and telling everyone we know so I hope there’ll be a good turnout.”
The efforts at the shopping centre have been driven by Soft Services Manager, Emily Rogers, whose team are normally found busy making sure the Shrewsbury shopping centres are clean and tidy.
She said: “We try to do a lot of work for charity and my regional manager approached me as she wanted every centre she was responsible for to join in with holding a coffee morning.
“I was only too happy to say yes. As much as we’d all like to think we won’t ever be affected by cancer, the fact is that so many of us are. The Macmillan nurses do a fantastic job and they need as much support as possible.
“I have liaised with all the businesses here and so many of them have come forward with cakes and contributions. My team have been roped in, so there’ll be a few cleaners and security guards lending a hand.
“We’ll be transforming the blue carpet area in the lower level of the Darwin centre into a café for the morning and we hope to raise as much as possible.”
Macmillan holds its World’s Biggest Coffee Morning annually, encouraging individuals, groups and businesses to host simultaneous events and last year 154,000 people signed up, raising a record £20 million.
Kevin Lockwood, Manager of the Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside Shopping Centres, said: “Emily and her team’s efforts should be commended and I am sure our very generous shoppers will do their best to support them.
“Our visitors will be able to enjoy some great shopping and then take a break with a brew and a piece of cake in the know they are helping to raise funds for a terrific cause.”
