Changes at `The Dog` in Ruyton

Yesterday, Yoland and I had a meeting with Tony Walsh, representing the new owners of the Talbot - Joule's Brewery of Market Drayton.  Lots of questions answered - and all good.

Joule's is a VERY old Brewery Brand - dating back to the 1770s.

They will introduce their three beers on transfer - Slumbering Monk, Joule's Pale Ale and the Blonde. They will be competitively priced - cheaper than the current beers.
They intend to offer guest beers as well - including Station for the time being.
They intend to introduce a range of new "Seasonal" ales in the Summer.

The pub will fall into their "Local" category - rather than a "tap" (they see "taps" as more of a "hard-surface" beer outlet).

Being "local" means that the Tenant will have more freedom in such areas as décor and food, for example. A new tenant will be encouraged and supported to offer whatever is popular in the local community. This includes maintaining a menu similar to today's, but with a few more options of the "less fussy and more wholesome" type. Andrea and most of the current kitchen staff are expected to stay. In fact, it seems that most of the current staff will stay, whether front of house or kitchen staff, at least for some time while they recruit a new tenant.

The B&B will remain on offer as it is - but will be reviewed in the longer term as a new tenant settles in.

The thought is to develop the Garage into a function room, and add a tasteful outside dining/drinking area.

The AgeUK Lunch Club will continue as is.

The car park can continue to be used by Parents dropping-off and collecting.

Opening hours will remain as is, though slightly longer hours are being considered for a Friday - depending on what a new tenant thinks.

And the free wi-fi will continue exactly as is.

The whole style was "it ain't broke, so doesn't need fixing" - so a process of slow evolution in conjunction with the local community, managed by the new tenant. It was pretty clear that Tony sees the pub as a central part of the community, describing the relationship as a "Partnership". Joules will be keen to find imaginative ways to support community activities - we have already discussed the Children's Christingle parade and the Santa Sleigh run at Christmas, for example.

Good news all round - so an excellent meeting.
