Message forwarded by Sue Hackett, Ruyton Parish Clerk.
Both a river and a canal run through the XI Towns so perhaps there is someone out there who might like to get involved.

Subject : Canal & River Trust - North Wales & Borders Partnership Members Recruitment
Supporting Local Canals
I write to you as the Chair of the North Wales and Borders Partnership of the Canal and River Trust.
This is one of 12 Partnerships created by the Canal & River Trust - a charitable trust looking after 2,000 miles of canals and rivers in England & Wales (replacing the former British Waterways).
The aim of the Partnerships is to give people a voice in the development and management of their waterway, help to shape plans for each waterway, guide the Trust's decisions about spending, develop local engagement, external funding and champion the interests of the waterways.
My partnership is currently looking for new members and I wanted to make sure that as many people as possible were aware of the opportunity to play a role in the future of the waterways.
I know that many parish councillors across the North Wales and Borders area are interested in what the canal offers to local communities and this could be a chance for greater involvement.
I attach a copy of the advert below and would be grateful if you could circulate to your parish councillors and anyone you, or they, think may be interested in this voluntary opportunity. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2015.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Yours sincerely
Brenda Harvey
Chair of the North Wales and Borders Waterway Partnership
North Wales & Borders (Members)
A message from the Chair, Brenda Harvey
The area of the beautiful North Wales & Borders runs from the River Mersey in the north to Wolverhampton in the south and from Northwich in Cheshire in the east to Newtown in Powys in the west.
Within this area there are some of the UK's quietest and busiest stretches of the waterway network and some of the greatest waterway treasures.
The current volunteer Partnership Members are committed to protecting and enhancing all the features that make the waterways in this area so special. We bring a diverse range of skills, experience and interests into policy-making and activity on our local waterways.
Would you like to join us?
Sitting alongside the area's management team, our role is to:
· Promote knowledge and use of our local waterways
· Understand local communities and help address their issues through the waterways
· Help shape the future plans of the Canal & River Trust
· Secure resources through our local knowledge
· Ensure that the plans and policies deliver improvements locally
We would welcome new members to bring us local knowledge across all our area and to add to the skills already in the Partnership team.
We are enthusiastic about what we do but a commitment to the improvement of the waterways (and the locations and communities along them), together with an outgoing nature and ability to work as part of a team, is more important than an existing detailed knowledge of the canals.
If this interests you and you would like to know more, or you would like to submit an application, please check out the information below.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Brenda Harvey,
Chair, North Wales & Borders Waterway Partnership
The North Wales & Borders Partnership is one of 12 Partnerships which cover the entire waterways network overseen by the Canal & River Trust.
The Partnerships are integrated into the structure of the Canal & River Trust and the Chair of each Partnership has a seat on the Trust's Council.
The aim of the Partnerships is to give people a voice in the development and management of their waterway, help to shape plans for each waterway, guide the Trust's decisions about spending, develop local engagement, external funding and champion the interests of the waterways.
At the North Wales & Borders Partnership, we have prepared a strategy which can be seen here.
Further background on our Partnership and its current members can be found here.
The Partnership works closely with the local Waterway Manager and, following a period of planning across the Canal & River Trust and locally, we are now implementing our Action Plan. Our actions are directed at improving the role waterways play in the lives of local communities of waterway users and visitors.
We are now looking to increase the size of our Partnership and fill some vacancies that have arisen. We are therefore looking for up to 6 new members for the Partnership. Appointments are for a period of up to 3 years.
We are looking for candidates who are team players, able to engage and inspire – including talking to groups, with potential partners including businesses, at public meetings, and with the media. Members will ideally have knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:
· Waterway activities (boating, angling, cycling, walking)
· Business and commerce (large or small enterprises)
· Tourism and leisure
· Learning and skills
· Young people's activities
· Planning
· Surveying, property management
· Fundraising
· Volunteering
· Community engagement
· Work with strategic partners including local authorities, health service, police, fire service
· Wider partnership working in areas such as heritage, environment, community development, sustainable transport, leisure, arts, sport
Partnership Members are appointed to act in the best interests of the waterways as a whole rather than to bring to the table any particular personal interests, causes or the views of a voluntary group (there are other routes for these matters to be brought to the attention of the Canal & River Trust).
We want the Partnership to have members who together have local knowledge of the North Wales & Borders Partnership area and so we are keen to see a geographical spread of membership if possible (see Area 5 on Map here).
The Canal & River Trust actively encourages diversity in all areas of the organisation to fully reflect the diversity of the communities around the waterways and to achieve a balance of genders. Applications from candidates who can help the Trust achieve this objective will be welcome.
Terms of Reference for the Partnership can be found here, and a profile for the role of Partnership Member can be found here.
How to Apply
If you would like to apply to be a Member, please complete our simple application form, setting-out your experience and qualifications for the role and return it to brenda.adams@canalrivertrust.org.uk by 31 January 2015. Arrangements for interviews will be agreed with shortlisted candidates.
If you wish to discuss further, please contact Wendy Capelle, Waterway Manager, on 0303 040 4040.
Please pass on this information to others who may be interested in this role.
