Meet the man behind the masterpieces in this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition

"This Brilliant, brave blockbuster reveals the true Rembrandt." The Guardian

"He is a man demonstrating the range of his techniques…and a sheer humanity that will captivate the public." The Independent

Every Rembrandt exhibition is eagerly anticipated, but this major new show hosted by London's National Gallery and Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum is an event like no other. Given exclusive, privileged access to both galleries, the film documents this landmark exhibition whilst interweaving Rembrandt's life story with the behind-the-scenes preparations at these world famous institutions.

The exhibition focuses on the highlights from the final years of Rembrandt's life, commonly thought to be his finest years. The masterpieces he produced during this period could be called his defining works, with each piece so soulful and honest that they helped sculpt our idea of Rembrandt as a man and as an artist.

This film explores each of the exhibition's key works, through contributions from specially invited guests including curators and leading art historians. For many, Rembrandt is the greatest artist that ever lived and this film seeks to explore the truth about the man behind the legend.

Summer 1914. In order to dedicate themselves to a life of study, the King and his friends take an oath to avoid the company of women for three years. No sooner have they made their idealistic pledge than the Princess of France and her ladies-in-waiting arrive, presenting the men with a severe test of their high-minded resolve.

Shakespeare's sparkling comedy delights in championing and then unravelling an unrealistic vow, and mischievously suggesting that the study of the opposite sex is in fact the highest of all academic endeavours. Only at the end of the play is the merriment curtailed as the lovers agree to submit to a period apart, unaware that the world around them is about to be utterly transformed by the war to end all wars.

Christopher Luscombe directs one acting company in both Love's Labour's Lost and Love's Labour's Won (usually known as Much Ado About Nothing). Christopher's directing credits include The Comedy of Errors and The Merry Wives of Windsor for Shakespeare's Globe as well as The Madness of George III and Spamalot in the West End.

This is a live screening of our new production of Love's Labour's Lost, which plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon from 23 September 2014 – 14 March 2015

The widowed Duchess of Malfi longs to marry her lover, the steward Antonio. But her rancorous brothers, Ferdinand and the Cardinal, are implacably opposed to the match. When their spy, Bosola, discovers that the Duchess has secretly married and carries Antonio's child, they exact a terrible and horrific revenge.

The Duchess of Malfi, featuring Hollywood star Gemma Arterton in the title role, is a thrilling combination of brilliant coups de théâtre, horrific set-pieces and vivid characters, all lit by Webster's obsessional imagination.

Gemma Arterton returned to The Globe to play the Duchess in this sell-out production. Gemma made her professional stage debut at the Globe in 2007, when she won huge critical acclaim as Rosaline in Love's Labour's Lost.

This most intimate Jacobean tragedy proved a truly sensational curtain-raiser for The Globe's very first season in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

The Globe On Screen production is the first ever theatrical production to be
filmed entirely in candlelight - a unique and un-missable opening for the 2015 cinema season.

This is a recording of the live performance from The Globe Theatre.

As part of a season marking the centenary of the First World War, Christopher Luscombe returns to the Royal Shakespeare Company to direct a single company of actors in a fresh pairing of two of Shakespeare's most sparkling comedies, set in a splendid country house just before and just after the war.

Returning to the RSC are Edward Bennett and Michelle Terry, who will play the lovers in both productions.

Autumn 1918. A group of soldiers return from the trenches. The world-weary Benedick and his friend Claudio find themselves reacquainted with Beatrice and Hero. As memories of conflict give way to a life of parties and masked balls, Claudio and Hero fall madly, deeply in love, while Benedick and Beatrice reignite their own altogether more combative courtship.

Shakespeare's comic romance plays out amidst the brittle high spirits of a post-war house party, as youthful passions run riot, lovers are deceived and happiness is threatened – before peace ultimately wins out.

Christopher Luscombe directs the second of Shakespeare's matching pair of comedies that rejoice in our capacity to find love in the most unlikely places. Better known as Much Ado About Nothing, the play is performed under the title Love's Labour's Won, a name possibly attributed to it during Shakespeare's lifetime.

This is a live screening of a new production of Love's Labour's Won, which plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon from 3 October 2014 – 14 March 2015.

A live broadcast of this stunning production of Verdi's masterpiece which reaches to the heart of the opera's themes of passionate love and tragic death.  The production is ideal for newcomers to opera with its contemporary staging, and a running time of less than two hours.

La traviata tells the moving story of how the beautiful but fragile courtesan Violetta is coerced into sacrificing her one hope of personal happiness for the sake of her lover's reputation.

A tragic and resonant tale of society and morality, Verdi's masterpiece combines compelling characters with hugely powerful, moving and instantly recognisable melodies, making it one of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time. Peter Konwitschny's celebrated production of La Traviata returns to ENO, cutting to the very heart of the opera's themes of passionate love and tragic death with a modern and uncluttered staging, and a running time of less than two hours.

A new play by David Hare, based on the book by Katherine Boo

Meera Syal (The Kumars, Goodness Gracious Me, Rafta Rafta at the National) returns to the National Theatre, directed by Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road).

Pulizter Prize-winner Katherine Boo spent three years in Annawadi recording the lives of its residents. From her uncompromising book, winner of the National Book Award for Non-Fiction 2012, David Hare has fashioned a tumultuous play on an epic scale.

India is surging with global ambition. But beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport lies a makeshift slum, full of people with plans of their own. Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house. Sunil, twelve and stunted, wants to eat until he's as tall as Kalu the thief. Asha seeks to steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a 'first-class person', while her daughter Manju intends to become the slum's first female graduate.

But their schemes are fragile; global recession threatens the garbage trade, and another slum-dweller is about to make an accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the neighbourhood.

From its sell-out run at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre comes this unique and critically acclaimed production of Shakespeare's tragic Hamlet. In this stripped-back, fresh and fast-paced version, BAFTA nominee Maxine Peake creates a Hamlet for now, giving a performance hailed as "delicately ferocious" by The Guardian and "a milestone Hamlet" by the Manchester Evening News.

Hamlet is Shakespeare's most iconic work. The play explodes with big ideas and is the ultimate story of loyalty, love, betrayal, murder and madness. Hamlet's father is dead and Denmark has crowned a new king. Consumed by grief, he struggles to exact revenge, with devastating consequences.

This groundbreaking stage production, directed by Sarah Frankcom, was the Royal Exchange's fastest-selling show in a decade.

Alongside Maxine Peake as the eponymous prince, a number of other roles, including Polonious and Rosencrantz, are also played by women.

Hamlet is brought to cinemas by director Margaret Williams, whose Written on Skin for the Royal Opera House/BBC won the Gramophone Contemporary Award and the Diapason d'Or, and producers Anne Beresford and Debbie Gray, the team behind the highly successful cinema broadcast of Peter Grimes on Aldeburgh Beach.

Please note tickets for Titus Andonicus will be on sale at a later date whilst we wait for the BBFC certification.
We have been advised that it is likely to be a (15).

Shakespeare's Roman-clad gore fest Titus Andronicus returns to Shakespeare's Globe for those of us who are lovers of bloody violence done up in elegant prose.

Returning to Rome from a war against the Goths, the general Titus Andronicus brings with him the queen Tamora and her three sons as prisoners of war. Titus' sacrifice of Tamora's eldest son to appease the ghosts of his 21 dead sons, and his decision to refuse to accept the title of emperor, initiates a terrible cycle of mutilation, rape and murder, At the centre of the nightmare moves the self-delighting Aaron.

Spectacularly, even grotesquely violent and daringly experimental, Titus was the smash hit of Shakepeare's early career, and is written with a ghoulish energy he was never to repeat elsewhere.

The 2015 cinema release will have audiences on the edges of their seats from start to grisly end.

"William Houston (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows; Elizabeth: The Golden Age) is magnetic in the title role; his interpretation of the Bard's imagined Roman general strikes the right balance between war-weary, melancholy and blood-thirsty lunacy, while Indira Varma's (Game of Thrones; Rome) revenge-mad Gothic queen Tamora is deliciously devious – prancing about the stage like a wicked witch, sewing seeds of conspiracy together with her lover Aaron (Obi Abili) and two sons (Samuel Edward-Cook and Brian Martin).

This new production may not be one for the kids, but is an enthralling and wonderfully ghastly rendition of one of Shakespeare's less-known, yet timeless historical plays." ***** - Mark Sempill The Upcoming

Audience warning this production contains scenes of blood and violence.
