It is a documentary about why we can't seem to get along with each other, even after thousands and thousands of years. UNITY explores humanity's hopeful transformation from living-by-killing into living-by-loving. It is a unique film about compassion for all beings, or all "expressions of life", going beyond all "separation based on form", and beyond perceiving opposites. Writer/director Shaun Monson, collaborating with an astounding cast of 100 celebrity narrators lending their voices (never before gathered in the history of filmmaking), presents a message of love, tragedy and hope, all set against the backdrop of some of the most compelling 20th and 21st Century footage imaginable. Presented in chapters, UNITY takes an in-depth look at what it truly means to be human, to be mortal, and to be incarnate in this world. The film explores our brief existence among the Cosmos (Chapter I), then moves on to the perceptions of our Mind (Chapter II), the nature of our Body (Chapter III), the infinite capacity of our Heart (Chapter IV), and ultimately to the mysterious energy of the Soul (Chapter V). Initially, these chapters will appear unrelated to each other. But as the film progresses it becomes clear that all life is interconnected, and each chapter represents the totality of our mortal experience, which is only measured in decades. With a cast of 100 voices all speaking as one voice, UNITY is a genuine cinematic experience unlike any other. Song of the Sea is based on the ancient Celtic myth of the selkie, a creature that lives in the sea as a seal but then sheds its seal skin to become human when it steps on land. The film concentrates on the life of Saoirse, a six-year-old girl who lives with her brother, Ben, and their father, Conor in a lighthouse. When Saoirse is beckoned to the ocean one night by a group of seals, they reveal not only the creature that she is but what mission she has to accomplish in the future. Song of the Sea made its debut at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival last September where Toronto Review critic Carlos Aguilar described it as 'one of the most blissfully beautiful animated films ever made.' "This superb Irish animation from the director of 2009's The Secret of Kells is a treat; an enchanting and very moving "family film". ***** Mark Kermode Run time: 94 mins | | | A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (15) Wednesday 19th August 7:30pm Tickets: £6.00 Adult/£4.00 Under 16's Book online: http://www.kinokulture.org.uk/a-girl-walks-home-alone/4590049616 Or call the Box Office: 01691 238167 This acclaimed Iranian movie is a striking blend of vampire story and western. Amidst the shadowy, industrial Iranian ghost town of 'Bad City,' a guy meets a girl. But she has a deadly secret - she is in fact a vampire. Billed as the first ever 'Iranian Vampire Western', this critically praised and visually beautiful genre mash-up continues the run of exciting content to have emerged from the country in recent years, including the Oscar-winning A Separation. It's the feature debut of director Ana Lily Amirpour, and is based on her award-winning short film of the same name. A hit on last year's award circuit, having generated rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, the movie is shot in luminous black and white and further demonstrates that Iranian cinema is a force to be reckoned with. Amirpour has already been compared to the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Jim Jarmusch by several noted film critics. "exhilarating vampire girl power" ***** Mark Kermode "Beguiling in its strangeness, yet also effortlessly evoking recognizable emotions such as loneliness and the feeling of being stuck in a dead-end town and life, this moody and gorgeous film is finally more about atmosphere and emotions than narrative -- and none the worse for it." The Hollywood Reporter Director: Ana Lily Amirpour Starring: Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi, Marshall Manesh Run time: 101 mins | | | AMY (15) Thursday 20th August 7:30pm Tickets: £6.00 Adult/£4.00 Under 16's Book online: http://www.kinokulture.org.uk/amy/4590018868 Or call the Box Office: 01691 238167 Acclaimed Senna director Asif Kapadia presents a compelling look at the life of late singer Amy Winehouse. When Amy Winehouse passed away in 2011 at the age of 27, her death rocked the music world. Winner of five Grammy Awards for her album Back to Black, Winehouse's distinctively smoky tones made her one of the most popular music artists of the last 20 years. Her singles 'Rehab,' 'Stronger than Me' and 'Love is a Losing Game' were all award-winning successes and helped her establish a worldwide fanbase. Following his critically acclaimed 2010 documentary Senna, director Asif Kapadia now delves behind the headlines and explores the life of this troubled yet hugely talented performer, tracing her rise to superstardom from childhood to breakthrough success and beyond. What emerges is a haunting, gripping portrayal of success, and a woman whose personal demons often overshadowed her triumphs. "Stunningly moving and powerful: intimate, passionate, often shocking, and almost mesmerically absorbing." ***** The Guardian Run time: 123 mins | | | Love & Mercy (12A) Friday 21st August 7:30pm Saturday 22nd August 7:30pm Tickets: £6.00 Adult/£4.00 Under 16's Book online: http://www.kinokulture.org.uk/love-and-mercy/4589993583 Or call the Box Office: 01691 238167 The amazing true story of Brian Wilson, the visionary leader of one of the world's biggest ever bands, the Beach Boys. It's the 1960s, and the Beach Boys are one of the world's most successful pop groups. But their future is thrown into doubt when their leader, Brian Wilson (Paul Dano), suffers a debilitating panic attack and quits touring. With his behaviour becoming increasingly erratic he retires to the studio to work on what will become the band's masterpiece, Pet Sounds. Twenty years later, a now middle-aged Wilson (John Cusack) is a broken, confused man, and now under the supervision of the tyrannical Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti). But when Wilson meets car saleswoman Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks), Landy finds himself under threat as the controlling influence in the singer's life. Based on the true story of the legendary Brian Wilson, this innovative, acclaimed biopic flits between the 1960s and the 1980s. "That so much of it rings true is a credit to the film-makers; that Wilson lived some (if not all) of it is a reminder of his matchless alchemical magic." **** Mark Kermode Director: Bill Pohlad Starring: John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Giamatti Run time: 121 mins | | | RSC Live: Othello (12A) Wednesday 26th August 7:00pm Tickets: £12.00 Adult/£10.00 Under 16's Book online: http://www.kinokulture.org.uk/rsc-othello/4589475206 Or call the Box Office: 01691 238167 Shakespeare's timeless classic of love, jealousy and revenge is broadcast live from Stratford-upon-Avon. However, the treacherous Iago lurks in the shadows, driven by prejudice and hatred to destroy Othello, who realises too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but his own fragile and destructive pride. Holby City actor Hugh Quarshie returns to the RSC to play the iconic Othello, following his roles in Faust and Julius Caesar, whilst film and theatre actor Lucian Msamati plays the scheming Iago. Broadcast live from Stratford-upon-Avon, this riveting new production is directed by Iqbal Khan, who directed the Bard's Much Ado About Nothing to great success back in 2012.
