Welcome to Spring 2016 at the Willow Gallery 

With a New Exhibition currently being curated that celebrates plants and pollinators – and Oswestry's most historical site, The Old Hill Fort - it's a great time to come along to your local gallery to enjoy a look around.  As always we've lots coming up over the next few months from Art Classes to Music Nights.  Hope you can find time to call in, we look forward to seeing you.

Open Invitation to the Opening of 'Artists Hugging the Hillfort'. 
Saturday 23th April, 10am to 5pm (part of a 4 week exhibition)

A day of events to open our new exhibition and highlight the plight and historical significance of one of Britain's most spectacular and impressive early Iron Age hill forts.
There will be coffee and Hillfort cupcakes available from the cafe  (with a donation going to HOOOH*) and then a Hillfort talk  by John Swogger at 11.00 a.m on Artists and Archaeologists.
There will also be a raffle with proceeds going to the HOOOH Campaign with some great prizes –
First - One of the Willow Eatery's superb cakes - a decorated Old Oswestry Hillfort Cake!
Second- A beautiful Graham Mitchell pendant
Third - A Tereska Shepherd wonderful Bee carrier bag
Fourth -A leather ipad bag (multi-coloured) from Rowanthorn
Fifth – A framed print by Diana Baur
 
Spring Open Exhibition:  Plants and Pollinators &  Artists Hugging the Hillfort
Saturday April 23rd – Saturday 21st May

Complementing the more than 50 works of art that celebrate our local Hillfort Heritage will be an exhibition of work featuring Plants and Pollinators.  These two exhibitions will run side by side from April 23rd through to May 21st.  Both offer us a reflection on what a beautiful part of the countryside we live in and how important it is to protect – and enjoy – what is around us.


Workshops and Courses

All our Workshops and Courses and held at the Gallery in relaxed, small and supportive groups. Please book in advance to secure a place.

Feltmaking Waterfall Landscapes with Susan Mulcock.
Saturday 23rd April 10am – 4pm £45
We've just two places left on this always popular course.  Sue will help you experiment with various fibres and inlays to create the basis of a waterfall scene in felt ready for you to take home.  Sue will provide all the materials.
 
Machine embroidered fabric landscapes with Jenny O'Leary
Saturday 30th April 10am – 4pm £40
Create a real or imaginary landscape using fabric scraps, threads, yarns etc., and then further embellish it with machine embroidery.  You'll need to bring along images for inspiration also fabric scraps etc.   Jenny will also have fabrics for you to use.  Please bring your own sewing machine if possible.  Contact the gallery if you need to borrow one.  (Also bring small sharp scissors).
 
*Introduction to Delrin/Wood Engraving
Friday 6th May to Sunday 8th May, 10am – 4pm each day.
£160 (£140 concessions)
This 3 day course with Judy Macklin aims to develop competency in the handling and cutting of wood and plastic polymer blocks for engraving as well as providing an historical and contemporary context for the practice.
 
*Seas & Skies in Watercolour and mixed Media
Monday 9th May/23rd May/6th June/20th June  10am – 3.30pm
£100 /Concession £80
This is an accredited painting course run by Tereska Shepherd MA. Inspiring and practical, this course will help you to capture the light, colours and weather effects on the skies and seascapes.

Drawing Bodies with David Bannister
Wednesday 11th May/ 18thMay/ 25th May
10.15am – 1.15pm £75
Join artist David Bannister drawing the human form, David will be looking closely at how muscles and bone create the human form and how these definitions can be expressed in your drawing.
 
Printmaking with Ian Phillips
Saturday 14th May 10am – 4pm £55 ( min age 18)
Learn various linocut techniques and hand burnishing printing with Ian Phillips.  These courses are always very popular – and these will be a second one on June 4th.  Ian provides all the equipment, you just need to bring along a picture that inspires you.
 
Little Summer Dress Sewing Workshop with Carol Grivell
Tuesday 17th May 10am – 4.30pm £50
Make your own summer dress under the guidance of Carol who will provide sewing machine and pattern. Carol will be in touch prior to the workshop to confirm who much material you will need.

Portraiture in Oils – a weekend course with Darren Fraser
Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd May, 10am to 4pm, Two day workshop for £60
Build your confidence by approaching the subject of Portraiture on a larger scale.  Darren's large, bold and colourful portraits have often been on display at the Willow and his works sells around the world.  Please bring along a good quality image that you will be working from.  Look for an image which has an interesting angle, colour, contrast and please print these at a good quality. Students will need to bring paints and brushes

Upcoming Music Nights
Dan Walsh
Our third Music Night in the Willow's LIVE Season  will be on Saturday May 21st and will feature Dan Walsh whose banjo playing is 'second to none in the UK and he'd put many to shame in the US too'.  With a great voice, great lyrics and 'staggering virtuoso picking' – this will no doubt be a great night.  Tickets are £10. The Willow Eatery will be open with a licensed bar for the evening.
