Glorious gardens open for NGS this week

Friday 20th May:  sees the nationally-acclaimed gardens at Wollerton Old Hall (4 miles SW of Market Drayton) staging a special open day for the National Gardens Scheme.  This 4-acre garden, created around a 16th century house, has many different colour-themed garden "rooms", vibrant with colour in early summer and one of the best gardens in the UK to visit.  Open 12-5pm; admission is £6.50 for adults, £1 for children; refreshments and plants for sale.

Sunday 22nd May: is a busy day for NGS in the county, with 4 beautiful early summer gardens to visit:

  • Ancoirean: at Alveley (6 miles S of Bridgnorth) is one of the prettiest town gardens that visitors can hope to experience.  Packed full of interesting plants and features, including a wonderful display of clematis, water features, acers and azaleas: there is much to admire in this well-loved garden.  Open on Sunday 22nd May (1-5pm); admission is £3.50 for adults, free for children.  Plants and home-made teas available.
  • The Citadel: at Weston under Redcastle (12m N of Shrewsbury) is a unique mature garden of 4 acres with an intriguing sandstone outcrop at its centre.  The imposing castellated house is surrounded by fine specimen trees, colourful rhododendrons and azaleas, a thatched Victorian summerhouse and enjoyable walks for all the family (including well-behaved dogs).  Open on Sunday 22nd May (2-5.30pm); admission is £4 for adults, free for children.  Refreshments available.
  • Mynd Hardy Plants:  at Diddlebury (off B4368 between Craven Arms and Bridgnorth).  This commercial nursery, in the beautiful Corvedale, is not only a wonderful place to buy special plants, the walled garden is planted exquisitely with a huge range of herbaceous perennials, which are a delight to behold in early summer.  This is an inspiring place to visit where visitors are assured of a warm welcome.  Open on Sunday 22nd May (11-5pm); admission is £4 for adults, free for children.  Refreshments available.

  • Stanley Hall:  at Bridgnorth.  This well-known garden has a wonderful approach along a ½ mile drive packed with colourful rhododendrons and azaleas.  Surrounding the Hall, there are many woodland walks in the 4 acres of garden where families (and well-behaved dogs) are welcome.  Also open, within the grounds of the Hall is the Dower House with contemporary sculptures and a walled vegetable garden.  The pretty garden at The Granary on the estate will also be open to visitors.  Open on Sunday 22nd May (2-6pm); admission is £4 for adults, free for children.  Homemade teas available.

Visitors to National Gardens Scheme gardens will have the satisfaction of knowing that their entrance fee is supporting valuable causes, as monies collected at the garden gate go to NGS beneficiary charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Hospices UK and the Carers Trust as well as many other vital nursing and caring charities such as Parkinsons UK and the MS Society.  In 2015, NGS donated £2.73m to these causes.
