The Life and Legacy of AlfredÆs Daughter Aethelflaed Warrior, Leader, Wife.

Joanna Arman, University of Winchester

Aethelflaed was a woman whose life and historical legacy continue to intrigue and provide inspiration for storytellers. How did a royal daughter, from a small kingdom in the southern corner of Britain, rise to become the most powerful woman of her time? Loved and honoured at home and abroad, known as much for her learning and patronage as her exploits as a warrior, Aethelflaed was so feared that the infamous Vikings surrendered to her without a fight.
