In 2019, working alongside Shropshire Wildlife Trust and with the support of generous local sponsors, John and Jenny Vidal organised an inspiring programme of wildlife and conservation-related talks and, after such a successful debut, it was planned that this would become an annual event for Oswestry. As some readers will know, John is the brother of Peter Vidal who founded the gallery. After Peter's sad death in 2014, John took over as director. He is also a freelance journalist, writing on major environmental issues. Jenny campaigns on pollution, transport and climate for Friends of the Earth. Common buzzard (Buteo buteo) often seen circling over Oswestry | | WILD WEDNESDAY TALKS Also unable to plan events in the usual way, Shropshire Wildlife Trust's Oswestry Branch has arranged a series of online talks, to be livestreamed on SWT's YouTube channel. The talks will also be available to watch after streaming, so you can catch up with any you missed and watch at a time that suits you best. SEPTEMBER TALKS Four of September's talks address the subject of rivers, a core part of Shropshire Wildlife Trust's work. Each talk will focus on a different aspect of our county's rivers, including ecology, wildlife and the Trust's work with farmers to reduce pollution. | | Love Your Magnificent Severn with Peter Lambert, River Projects Manager | | Farming by the Severn with Cath Edwards, STEPS & FaPCW Advisor | | North West Road - Are new roads really the answer? with Robin Major, Evidence & Data Manager | | Understanding River Ecology with Pete Lambert, River Projects Manager | | Wild Rivers & their Wildlife with Pete Lambert, River Projects Manager | | As you've no doubt spotted, the talk on 16 September is actually about Shrewsbury's proposed North West Relief Road. Inevitably, if built, the road would have an impact on the Severn, over which it would cross. All talks can be watched at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFNZuW3Fd8mNa-sUGsWJQdw There'll be further talks later in the autumn | | KINOKULTURE RE-OPENS TO FILM FANS After several months of closure, Oswestry's community cinema re-opens on 4 September, with distanced seating and all other safety measures in place. Face masks must be worn. This month's screenings will include A Night at the Louvre: Leonardo da Vinci; wintry, bittersweet Grand Budapest Hotel; and, from the director of The Full Monty, Military Wives, based on the choir led by Gareth Malone. So get ready to return to the best place to watch a movie and book your tickets now. | | VIRTUAL CURTAIN UP Local Community Holroyd Theatre is treating audiences to a free programme of virtual creativity, including music, art, theatre and dance. Flamenco guitarist Samuel Moore, originally scheduled to be with us in June, will hopefully be kicking off our live music scene, and we hope to have some idea when shortly: keep an eye on our website for this. >From the heart of Andalusia, flamenco has spread the world over to be a distinctive style of music and dance. Hailed as 'a fantastic flamenco guitarist' (BBC Radio 3), Samuel presents a diverse programme of the flamenco tradition and its most famous artists. He has performed across the UK, Europe and America, and is currently preparing to record his first solo album, The Masters of the Flamenco Guitar. | | WATER MUSIC Outdoors, music has been returning to live audiences, as here where Violette Provost and Clément Béguet of the French musical troupe Piano du Lac perform on La Sotonera Lake in Spain's Aragon Region. The group uses specially-designed floats to give concerts on lakes in different European countries. More about this delightful company at website.
