Message from Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury.

Shropshire Archives re-opening We're pleased to confirm that Shropshire Archives will be re-opening from 2 December 2020 when the current lock-down ends. Opening times will be 10am-2pm Wednesday to Friday. There will be continued restrictions to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.  We ask all visitors to: book spaces and order all documents a week in advance comply with social distancing and hygiene requirements and wear a face covering provide information for  NHS test and trace  read through the updated guidance at Plan Your Visit Thank you for your understanding.  If you have any queries please do ask these before you arrive, either through our website or by emailing archives@shropshire.gov.uk  We'll do our best to help in advance, so that we can limit onsite interaction. During lockdown Archives staff have been working throughout lockdown.  We've kept our enquiries, research and copying services going and have seen an upsurge in requests from people who weren't able to visit in person. We've also been putting more content online. We've added over 60 collections to our online catalogue during the lockdowns. These were formerly only available as printed lists in our searchroom or through the National Archives catalogue, Discovery.  They cover a range of subjects, from railways and mines to schools and landed estates. There are records of local businesses, solicitors, clubs, societies and churches.   Find out more in our blog. Staff and volunteers have been busy indexing too.  You can now search the pre 1841 census returns for Wellington and Shrewsbury and view free images on our website.  There's also a volume of poor law records for Wellington from 1821-1830.
