http://kntcs.tumblr.com/screenings To Launch our new season of Kinetics screenings in association with The Independent Cinema Office we are pleased to welcome Campbell Craig (Professor of International Politics, Aberystwyth University) who will introduce this unique screening of two films which together tell the story of the nuclear arms race of the 1960s onwards, while marking the 50th anniversary of one of the most controversial films ever made. Peter Watkins' chilling film The War Game (1965), made for BBC TV but subsequently banned, infamously imagines the effects of a nuclear strike on the UK, combining drama and documentary it draws a rather different conclusion than the prevailing propaganda at the time. In 1966 the film was given a theatrical release through the British Film Institute and garnered huge critical praise internationally, winning a number of prizes, including an Academy Award (intriguingly in the Best Documentary category). The film had a significant influence on the growing Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. To The Brink of Eternity, an episode of celebrated filmmaker Adam Curtis' television series Pandora's Box, charts the political background to the build-up of the Cold War to expose crucial flaws in the policy of Mutually Assured Destruction, or MAD, which was eventually adopted. When The War Game was released in 1966 the Observer reviewed it as A warning masterpiece. It may be the most important film ever made.
