Shopping, singing and strumming as Oxjam launches in Darwin Centre

Shrewsbury's busy Darwin Shopping Centre will resound on Saturday to the soaring harmonies of a rock choir and the tuneful strumming of massed ukuleles.

It's all part of the Shrewsbury Oxjam, a day of music and song at eight venues around the town to raise money and raise awareness about international aid agency Oxfam.

Oxjam will begin in the Darwin Centre at 11am when the Shrewsbury Rock Choir belt out a selection of hits in the first of two 20-minute sessions before 12 noon and the bustling mall will also play host to the 15 ukeleles of the Shropshire Ukelele Massive between 1pm and 3pm.

Brighid Carey, Shrewsbury Takeover Manager for Oxjam, said: "The Darwin Centre is the ideal place to start because it is always busy on a Saturday and the acoustics there are fantastic.

"We've got the Rock Choir opening for us this year and they will be performing two 20-minute sets with the first at 11am.

"It's the third time we've had the event in Shrewsbury and as well as raising money for the charity we want to make people aware of the work that Oxfam does and introduce a new generation to it and the best way to do that is through music.

"It's a really great event and everyone gives their time and effort free and it should be a lot of fun."

Kevin Lockwood, Manager of the Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside Shopping Centres, said: "We're really happy to get involved again in what is a fantastic event for a very good cause.

"The Darwin Shopping Centre is ideal for something like this and both the choir and the ukuleles will sound really good in there."

Oxjam will also see a host of other artists performing around the town on Pride Hill, in Stop Coffee House, Ashley's Bar, The Old Post Office, The Oxfam Shop and in the evening in The Old Post Office, Havana Republic and The Alb.
