These paintings count among the world's favourites. Renoir, however, grew tired of this style and changed course. This stunning film – based on the remarkable collection of 181 Renoirs at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia – examines the direction he then took and why it provokes such extreme reactions right up to today. Some claim they are repulsed by Renoir's later works and some claim they are seduced. What may surprise many is that among the many artists who sought Renoir's new works out and were clearly highly influenced by them were the two giants of the 20th century – Picasso and Matisse. The film is a fresh new biography of this artistic giant but more than that it uncovers a rarely told story that places Renoir as a critical link between the old and the new. Shot in secret and entirely from the confines of a taxi cab, Panahi plays a loosely scripted, taxi-driving version of himself, seen travelling across the city, picking up a wide array of passengers and speaking, arguing and thinking with them. Reminiscent of Kiarostami's Ten in concept and style, and featuring wonderfully authentic performances from its cast of non-actors, Taxi Tehran finds a perfect blend between documentary realism and cinematic poetry that few outside of contemporary Iranian cinema achieve. Set largely in a luxury Swiss spa, Youth is a deliciously bittersweet drama from acclaimed Italian director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty). It focuses on the friendship between Fred (Michael Caine, in scintillating form), a curmudgeonly retired composer and elderly film director Mick (Harvey Keitel). Fred is resisting attempts to revive his greatest work, while Mick is desperate to make a comeback movie starring his former muse and favoured actress Brenda (Jane Fonda). If that weren't enough, members of Fred's family suddenly arrive on the scene. Sorrentino demonstrates his complete mastery of storytelling by skilfully weaving the various narrative strands into a moving, funny and affecting whole. Stylish, witty and emotionally resonant, Youth also features sharp and smart references to pop culture – including a cameo by Paloma Faith – as well as movies past and present. It offers further evidence, if any were needed, of Sorrentino's position as one of contemporary cinema's finest filmmakers. - Adrian Wootton BFI Director: Paolo Sorrentino Starring: Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, Paul Dano, Jane Fonda Italy 2015 Run time: 124 mins English Language | | | The Revenant (15) Borderlines Film Festival Friday 4th March 7:30pm Saturday 5th March 7:30pm Tickets: £6.50 Adult/£4.50 Under 16's Book online: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/118651 Or call the Box Office: 01691 238167 Leonardo DiCaprio stars in Alejandro González Iñárritu's follow-up to his Oscar-winning Birdman (re-teaming him with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki) for one of the most anticipated films of the year. The surprise winner of Un Certain Regard at this year's Cannes, this desolately beautiful film follows Gummi (Sigurður Sigurjónsson) and Kiddi (Theodór JúlÃusson), brothers who live on neighbouring sheep farms but haven't spoken to each other for forty years. Then disease threatens the health and ancient lineage of their beloved rams, and the brothers are forced to communicate once again. Written and directed by documentarian GrÃmur Hákonarson (A Pure Heart), it's a naturalistic portrait of rural life that, like another recent Icelandic hit Of Horses and Men, utilises both the austere beauty of the country's landscape and its people's seemingly native wry, deliciously mordant humour. Three sister's take in a younger sibling when their father dies, in Hirokazu Kore-eda's lovely drama. Hirokazu Kore-eda gave priority to male characters in his last two films, Like Father, Like Son and I Wish, so it's especially refreshing that Our Little Sister focuses so squarely on female relationships. In particular, the lives of four young women, related through their late father, in provincial Japan. Eschewing the melodramatic, the result is one of his loveliest, most lissom films, full of quiet joy and simple pleasures. As the four young women attempt to help each other along, the film touches on themes of stolen childhood and genetic inheritance, but it also involves us in their daily lives over the course of changing seasons. Not dissimilar to the little treats they give each other, Kore-eda's film resembles a series of joyous surprises. Like a beautiful embroidery, it's the product of skill and patience that ultimately allows the beholder to share in its state of grace. - Tim Robey Director: Hirokazu Kore-Eda Cast: Ayase Haruka, Nagasawa Masami, Kaho Japan 2015 Run time: 128 mins Japanese with English subtitles Preview courtesy of Curzon Artificial Eye | | | Spotlight (15) Borderlines Film Festival Friday 11th March 7:30pm Saturday 12th March 7:30pm Tickets: £6.50 Adult/£4.50 Under 16's Book online: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/118870 Or call the Box Office: 01691 238167 The extraordinary true story of how investigative journalists uncovered an abuse scandal and cover-up. Unsurprisingly, Hou Hsiao-Hsien's foray into wuxia (traditional Chinese martial arts) is very different from most films of the genre. During the Tang dynasty, a trained assassin (Shu Qi), deemed insufficiently ruthless by her mentor, is sent on a mission that involves killing a powerful lord who happens to be her cousin (Chang Chen). The plotting is highly intricate, but Hou is more concerned with his heroine's moral and psychological progress and with the fruitful tension between stillness and movement, contemplation and action. His customary long takes, composed and lit to perfection by Mark Lee Ping, are punctuated by rapidly cut, expertly staged flurries of combat – all the more effective for being infrequent and unusually realistic. A film of astonishing elegance and originality. | | | |
