'A tortuous, well-acted, crisply photographed and immensely enjoyable thriller.' Time Out

John Dahl's neo-noir has one of the all time great femme fatale performances from Linda Fiorentiono as Bridget Gregory. Self-interested and willing to achieve her ends by any means, we are quickly caught in her web.

Having made off with the ill-gotten gains of a drug deal, Bridget washes up in Beston, a tiny town in New York State. There she pulls Mike (Peter Berg) into her web and starts living a suburban life. Needless to say, her hardboiled past catches up with her, with her robbed husband (Bill Pullman) hot on her trail. Before long she is manipulating everyone in town to deadly effect.

Originally sent straight to VHS in the United States, its success in cinemas in the UK made it a box office hit in America. This erotic thriller has all of the classic film noir tropes, and none of the tempered morality. Smouldering with vice and passion, The Last Seduction is a pretty poison that will slip down all too easily.

Director: John Dahl

USA 1994

Cast: Linda Fiorentino, Peter Berg, Bill Pullman

Run time: 110 mins

The BFI Thriller season takes place in cinemas across the UK, on BFI Player and BFI DVD, on broadcast television, and with education partners INTO FILM, and is accompanied by a lavishly illustrated new BFI book.

'Suburbicon' is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns… the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. Olivier award-winner Eve Best (A Moon for the Misbegotten and Hedda Gabler) and BAFTA-nominated actress Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax) star in this new classically staged production of Oscar Wilde's comedy directed by Dominic Dromgoole, former Artistic Director of Shakespeare's Globe. The first play from the Classic Spring Theatre Company's Oscar Wilde Season, A Woman of No Importance will be broadcast live to cinemas from the Vaudeville Theatre in London's West End.

An earnest young American woman, a louche English lord, and an innocent young chap join a house party of fin de siècle fools and grotesques. Nearby a woman lives, cradling a long-buried secret. First performed in 1893, Oscar Wilde's marriage of glittering wit and Ibsenite drama satirised the socially conservative world of the Victorian upper-class, creating a vivid new theatrical voice which still resonates today.

before the play begins, there will be a short introduction (exclusive to cinemas) from the Director Dominic Dromgoole and Oscar Wilde's grandson Merlin Holland, which will include fascinating insights about the playwright, the play and the Vaudeville Theatre.

This fascinating cinema event, British Museum presents: Hokusai, is a groundbreaking documentary and exclusive private view of the British Museum exhibition Hokusai: beyond the Great Wave.  Filmed in Japan, the US and the UK, the film focuses on Hokusai's work, life and times in the great, bustling metropolis of Edo, modern Tokyo.  Introduced by arts presenter Andrew Graham-Dixon, and featuring artists David HockneyGrayson Perry and Maggi Hambling, this is the first UK biography of Japan's greatest artist. Using extraordinary close-ups and pioneering 8K Ultra HD video technology, Hokusai's paintings and prints are examined by world experts who are at the forefront of digital art history.

Hokusai spent his life studying and celebrating our common humanity as well as deeply exploring the natural and spiritual worlds, using the famous volcano Mount Fuji as a protective presence and potential source of immortality. He knew much tragedy, was struck by lightning and lived for years in poverty, but never gave up his constant striving for perfection in his art. Set in rural Pakistan, three women must do all they can to defend their home from a group of armed men.

Based on a true story, this striking drama sees a mother and her two young daughters; Nazo and Saeda, fight to protect their secluded home from an army of armed men, who want to take it forcibly from them. The intruders have been sent to the property by the girls' uncle who will go to any lengths to take ownership of the building.

The neighbours have been warned off and the corrupt local police offer no help. The women are truly on their own in this fight for survival, armed with machine guns and a supply of bullets thinning fast, they still refuse to give in.

An exciting yet tense first feature from British Pakistani filmmaker Sarmad Masud.

In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women's movement, the 1973 tennis match between women's world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men's-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world.

As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles.  The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed.  And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue).

Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.

Rachel Weisz has established herself as one of the finest British actors of her generation; one who has never shied away from challenging roles. Here she plays the titular role in writer Daphne Du Maurier's chilling period thriller. When young Englishman Philip hears of the death of his cousin Ambrose, he becomes convinced that Ambrose's wife Rachel is responsible and he plots his revenge against her. However, upon meeting her he finds himself falling irresistibly under the beautiful Rachel's beguiling spell…

'Underlying it all is a strongly feminist message about power, money and male fear of what might happen if a woman should gain possession of both - agreeably subversive stuff to find in a crowd-pleasing period drama.' Sight and Sound

Royal Opera: Verdi's Rigoletto

The corruption of innocence is at the heart of Verdi's potent tragedy in David McVicar's production for The Royal Opera.

Rigoletto, court jester to the libertine Duke of Mantua, is cursed by the father of one of the Duke's victims for his irreverent laughter. When the Duke seduces Rigoletto's daughter Gilda, it seems the curse is taking effect...

David McVicar's production highlights the cruelty at the heart of the court of Mantua. Richly dressed courtiers engage in orgies and revelries to Verdi's heady, spirited dances. The opera's many musical highlights include the ebullient 'La donna è mobile', in which the Duke boasts of his disregard for women; Gilda's exquisite, plangent duets with Rigoletto and the Duke; and the gorgeous Act III quartet that beautifully weaves the voices together as the story quickens to its shattering conclusion.

Giuseppe Verdi wrote in 1855 that Rigoletto was his 'best opera'. He had had to overcome state censorship to stage it – the censors objected to its depiction of an immoral ruler – but he was vindicated by the premiere's huge success in 1851. Rigoletto was performed 250 times in the next 10 years and has remained one of the most popular of all operas.

Our final film in the BFI Thriller Season is Francis Ford Coppola's tour de force in editing and sound design and the ultimate paranoia thriller.

Gene Hackman plays Harry Caul in Francis Ford Coppola's classic paranoid thriller, made in between the first two parts of The Godfather trilogy. Caul is a surveillance expert, tasked with recording a couple with cold professional distance by an unknown client. But what he captures raises unsettling, deadly questions. Wrestling with the echoes of the past, Caul is tormented by past mistakes and forced to engage with his work's moral implications.

Released within years of the Watergate scandal, Coppola's film is both a telling document of the paranoid '70s and also a chilling reminder for an age in which surveillance is the norm. A triumph of editing by Walter Murch, Caul's obsessive replaying of the couple's conversation turns the screw for an unforgettable conclusion.

Featuring an incredible cast of supporting actors – especially Harrison Ford, Robert Duvall and John Cazale – this is a haunting film about technology, alienation and guilt.

Exhibition on Screen is thrilled to present one of the most talked-about exhibitions of the year. Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before traveling to London and Washington.

One can't appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d'Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least-known of all the impressionists – until now.

Beanpole comedy duo Gordon and Abel return in this ingeniously entertaining story of a librarian searching for her aunt. Misunderstandings and delicious sight gags abound.

The inimitable beanpole duo of Fiona Gordon and Dominique Abel (The Fairy, Rumba) apply their idiosyncratic comic eccentricity to this wayward tale of being down but not out in the City of Light.

Gordon plays a naïve librarian who leaves her snowbound home for Paris, to rescue her long-lost aunt (doyenne Emmanuelle Riva, relishing the chance to play farce). On arrival, Fiona loses her rucksack and her bearings but finds homeless Dom (Abel), teaming with him on a series of absurd adventures that showcase the pair's physical elasticity and elegant, Jacques Tati-like comic timing.

There's more dialogue than in the team's previous films, but visual comedy remains foremost, from a superb restaurant set-piece to a moment of weightless passion in a pup tent. The duo mix comic-strip visual sensibility with child-like innocence and an outrageous sense of mischief. More fun than a barrel of monkeys let loose on a bateau-mouche.
