At the same time this summer sees the grand opening of the first OSWESTRY FESTIVAL OF NATURE, organised by the Willow in collaboration with Shropshire Wildlife Trust - and, throughout July and August, some of Britain's most renowned naturalists will be giving evening talks at the gallery on the state of wildlife, from local to global. The talks are being generously sponsored by Country Gardens & Woodlands, Northern Industrial Battery Services, Stan's Superstore, Stokes of England Blacksmithing Company and Shropshire's own Treflach Farm. PROGRAMME  We open our festival with a drinks reception on Friday July 5 (6.30pm), a glass of fizz adding a touch of sparkle. This will be followed at 7.30pm by legendary author, poet and Shropshire countryman PAUL EVANS [https://www.paulevanswenlockedge.com/] in conversation with wilderness writer and rock climber JIM PERRIN. Both are Guardian Country Diarists, acclaimed authors and BBC natural history broadcasters. Tickets ú8    Mon-Sat, 6 July-24 August  æEARTH, AIR, FIRE & WATERÆ EXHIBITION  This important conservation-themed exhibition will be raising awareness through art of environmental issues and the damage that consumer culture is causing to the natural world. So, on Saturday July 6, please join us for this free event (7-9pm) for the opening night, enjoy a complimentary drink and meet some of the artists. On Tuesday July 16 (7.30pm) we welcome BBC Springwatch presenter and radical conservationist IOLO WILLIAMS. Iolo [https://iolowilliams.co.uk/], who is from Lake Vyrnwy and knows Oswestry well, will talk about his early days as a RSPB warden and more recent times as one of Britain's most outspoken naturalists. Tickets ú8    On Saturday July 27 (7.30pm), David Attenborough's favourite Arctic cameraman DOUG ALLAN comes. Doug is a biologist [https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/profiles/4pDXNwKSbL933jk4fHqN2Hw/doug-allan] who has filmed for Blue Planet and nearly every great natural history TV programme in the past 20 years. Says Attenborough: 'Doug is not as other men. He cheerfully endures conditions more uncomfortable than anyone I know and has an uncanny understanding of animals.' Unmissable. Tickets ú8    KEITH OFFORD is from the Ceiriog Valley and one of Britain's most respected raptor and biodiversity experts, leading tours all over the world and monitoring breeding curlews, buzzards and other wildlife on the Berwyns. Keith [http://www.keithofford.co.uk/] will be talking on Friday August 2  (7.30pm) about a secret, inspiring wood that he knows near Oswestry that used to shelter a hermit and is full of the most extraordinary old trees. Tickets ú8    PENNY METAL and ALISON BENJAMIN will together give the view of nature from the cities on Friday 9 August  (7.30pm). Penny [https://insectinside.me/category/penny-metal/] spent five years recording the bugs, beetles and insects in her local green patch in South London and found an astonishing 550 species. Alison, whose new book on bees is out soon, is co-founder of Urban Bees [http://www.urbanbees.co.uk/who/who.htm] that works with communities, companies and charities to help bees in cities. Tickets ú8    Lastly, Guardian writer and acclaimed natural history author PATRICK BARKHAM [https://www.curtisbrown.co.uk/client/patrick-barkham-1] comes on Friday August 16  (7.30pm)  from his native Norfolk to talk butterflies. Patrick is best known for his two books on the British islands, but will talk about how he set off to locate all 59 varieties of British native butterfly. Tickets ú8    On Friday August 23  (7.30pm) Guardian environmental editor DAMIAN CARRINGTON will chair a discussion/debate about the steep decline of the natural world and what we as individuals can do.
