Documentarian Jeremiah Zagar (In a Dream, Captivated: The Trials of Pamela Smart) moves into narrative features with this fluid, dream-like adaptation of Justin TorresÆ autobiographical novel about a mixed-race family with three inseparable young sons in upstate New York, that screened to acclaim at Sundance 2018. Manny (Isaiah Kristian), Joel (Josiah Gabriel), and Jonah (Evan Rosado) are tearing their way through childhood. Their mother (Sheila Vand) and father (Ra·l Castillo) have a volatile relationship that makes and unmakes the family many times over, often leaving the boys fending for themselves; and as their parents fight, Manny and Joel begin to grow into versions of their father while their mother seeks to shelter her youngest, Jonah, within the cocoon of home. Distanced from his brothers, Jonah becomes increasingly aware of his desperate need to escape and begins to embrace an imagined world all his own. Lyrical, impressionistic, arrestingly beautiful and strongly performed (with the boys all played by non-professional actors), ZagarÆs heartbreaking film û part coming of age story, part sexual exploration, part magical realism û explores the animalism of young children alongside that of violent, warring adults. "There is a diaphanous beauty to this striking US indie; an impressionistic, free-spirited, skittish quality that belies the weight of the themes that it explores. One of the discoveries of the year." **** The Guardian Director: Jeremiah Zagar Cast: Sheila Vand, Ra·l Castillo, Evan Rosado USA 2018 Run time: 94 mins | | | Late Night (15) Friday 9th August 7:30pm Saturday 10th August 7:30pm Monday 12th August 7:30pm Thursday 15th August 1:30pm Tickets: ú8.00 Adult ú7.00 16-30's, Students, Jobseekers ú5.00 Under 16's Book online: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/kinokulture/e-ydzrxq Or call the Box Office: 01691 238167 LATE NIGHT is the story of legendary late-night talk show host Katherine Newbury (Thompson) who, after years of complacency and declining ratings, finds her show is on the network's chopping block. Katherine's decision has unexpectedly hilarious consequences, as her show is upended by Molly's passionate, unapologetic, at times outright bizarre approach to comedy and to life. By finally opening up to Molly and to her audience, with warmth, vulnerability (and the occasional menopause joke) Katherine reconnects with both the public and those closest to her. Challenging preconceptions with a balanced observation of the battle, this ambiguous, stirring documentary is a gripping exploration of modern environmentalism.
