What could be more apt in these troubled times than a festival on the peace-promoting theme of Transcending Borders? | | | Sophia Rahman writes; If you recognise the enriching experience that live performance can offer, if you stand together with us for freedom of artistic expression in the face of political turmoil, and acknowledge the civilising influence of music and the creative arts in a desperately unstable world, please do come and support us in this year's life-affirming festival. You don't have to be knowledgeable about music in order to enjoy it, to support its ideals, to take solace and comfort in it and to find it uplifting. This year's artists are hand-picked to navigate uncharted waters, to convey you to distant realms, to blur genre distinctions of jazz / gypsy / Jewish / classical / Spanish / Moorish / Bengali, and entice you to step beyond everyday states of consciousness into the enchanted world of music… Join us as we visit Rebecca Clarke's river of forgetfulness in the song Lethe or her drowsy viola god Morpheus, or voyage with multi-award-winning jazz pianist Zoe Rahman and her saxophonist brother Idris to Dreamland. Tenor Mark Padmore, will creatively explore longing, loss and the ultimate border between life and death in Schubert's final songs. Similar themes are addressed in the highly evocative 'On Wenlock Edge', Ralph Vaughan Williams' setting of six poems from A. E. Houseman's A Shropshire Lad, our contribution to the 150th anniversary celebrations of the composer's birth. This year's festival also offers an eclectic programme of chamber music, from Brahms to Prokofiev and Granados to Debussy and Ravel, in which I'm sure you will find much to delight and surprise you. | | | No shortage of tickets! If you haven't yet bought your tickets or don't like booking online, there will be plenty of tickets available on the door for all concerts. These will all be un-numbered and booked seats will be clearly marked, so you will be able to choose any available seat. It will also be possible to purchase un-numbered tickets for subsequent concerts. Payment can be made by cash, card or cheque. | | | Festival Food Picnic boxes will be available for purchase from Whittington Castle, and meals from the White Lion pub. Both will need to be pre-ordered. More information wil follow soon. I am told that the Whittington Chip Shop is very good, too. The bar will be open during the interval between concerts as well as in the interval during the main concerts. | | | | |
