Break for the Borderlands - Early Summer
Oswestry is vibrant market town in North Shropshire, just a few miles from Wales - a great place to enjoy stunning countryside and the perfect base to explore the best Shropshire & Borderland attractions. If you're planning a staycation or a day trip out before the kids break up, then take a look at Oswestry - friendly, historic, surprising. Here are just some of the events coming up, but we have many more!
Food festival fun - 9th & 10th July
There will be lots of foodie fun on the weekend of July 9th and 10th at Oswestry Food and Drink Festival. Our town centre streets will be filled with so many delicious treats. Street food, local flavours, entertainment and more. A free family festival with a few surprises! For the first time ever, you can enjoy the festival and then take a train ride from Cambrian Heritage Railways down to Weston Wharf for a taste or two at the local Stonehouse Brewery and Weston Village. Ride back into town later and take your time discovering Oswestry's great places to eat and drink.
Take a trip on a vintage train
If you like trains, you are spoilt for choice as we have four heritage railways to choose from! Journey through beautiful Mid Wales countryside with Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, who have a range of tours - perhaps try a 'fish and trip train' or for something extra special, go first class!! The Classic Transport Weekend will be held at Llangollen Railway on the 2nd and 3rd July. Classic motorcycles, cars, trucks, tractors and buses. Steam and heritage railcars too.
Walk in our glorious countryside
Oswestry is a magnet for walkers, especially as Offa's Dyke wanders along the Welsh/Shropshire Border almost on the edge of town. We also have Wat's Dyke, The Shropshire Way and Oswald's Trail to enjoy. If you have a head for heights, how about a stroll over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which is part of a World Heritage site along the Llangollen canal? Truly spectacular scenery.
Outdoor theatre, music & waterside fun!
There is plenty of outdoor entertainment to be had, so grab your picnic blanket, sit back and enjoy the performance! In the heart of Oswestry, we have Cae Glas Park, with its beautiful flower displays and Wilfred Owen statue. This summer, the park provides a stunning background to a number of free events including 'Panto in the Park - Rumble in the Jungle' and 'Reggae in the Park'. Ellesmere is a pretty market town full of beautiful meres and canals to explore. On the 3rd of July, the town is holding a Jubilee Regatta - watch the Bell Boat racing which is always great fun! And if you fancy your theatre set in the grounds of a medieval castle, then how about a performance of 'Alice in Wonderland' at Whittington Castle on the 21st of July.
You won't want to miss these two huge events in the Oswestry calendar - more info in our July Newsletter
