Thomas Penson (1790-1859) was county surveyor for Montgomeryshire and for Denbighshire, and the successful architect of many bridges and public buildings, including in Oswestry, the old national school on Welsh Walls, Holy Trinity church, and the Cross Market. His career was fraught with argument and controversy and his family life with tragedy and scandal.
