Oswestry Library - so much more than lending books

Message from Siobhan Shaw at Oswestry Library.

 Christmas Closing arrangements at Oswestry Library: We will close at 1pm on Saturday 24 Dec 2022, and open again at 9.30am on Tuesday 3 January 2023. No books will be due back over this closed period so don't worry about trying to return them. Staff will not be available to monitor the telephones or email services but you will be able to access the online e-library as normal.

Oswestry Family & Local History Group

Every Monday 10-12 noon    Every Friday 1.30-4pm

Oswestry Family and Local History volunteers run a twice-weekly advice service at Oswestry Library. Teams of trained, knowledgeable volunteers work alongside library staff to help both newcomers and experienced researchers to get the most from the expanded range of resources available.

No booking required, just drop in. 

Writing, Pitching, Publishing!

Saturday 3 December 2022   Book signing (drop in) 10-12 noon

Author talk (please book) 1.30-3pm   Free but please book

Want to write a book? Want to know how to get published? Author Geoffrey Fitchett had his first novel published last year and is busy writing the sequel. He will walk you through the process, the pitfalls, the barriers and your many options. You'll get advice on writing, pitching to publishers and getting the book to market. He will also talk about his hilarious, heart-warming book The Rescuists.

 Books Aloud

Tue 6 December 2022 2-3pm    Free, no need to book

Join us for a monthly session of reading aloud for adults. Simply relax with a cup of tea as staff and volunteers read aloud a selection of poems and stories on a given theme each month.

 Singing for Memories

Wed 7 December 2.30-3.30

Join staff for an informal hour at the library to sing favourites from the '50s, '60s and '70s. Feel memories flooding back and spirits lifting!  Everyone can sing - suitable for all, especially those with some memory loss

Tea/coffee on arrival.  This is a FREE session but please contact the library to book your place or email heather.rodenhurst@shropshire.gov.uk

Dungeons and Dragons

Usually 2nd Saturday every month

After overwhelming demand, we are delighted to be welcoming the Shropshire Dungeon Master back for more Saturdays at the library filled with magic and adventure! New players welcome, no experience required. Under 16s game in the morning, over 16s in the afternoon.

Language Café

Wednesday 14 December 10.30– 12noon

If you have an interest in foreign languages and would like to share your passion with like-minded people in an informal and relaxed environment, join our Language Café! Second Wednesday of every month. Organised by local linguist Ewa Corser from 'Word of Mouth Languages'. Coffee and tea provided (small donations welcomed).

Free of charge but please book your place.

Board Game Café

Saturday 17 December 10-1pm

A free board gaming session suitable for all ages! Come along and try out something new.

Free, no need to book.

Wicked Harvest by R.J. Turner

Saturday 17 December 2022, 2-3pm

Local crime author R. J. Turner has had his novel 'Wicked Harvest' published this year and is visiting Oswestry Library to talk about the book and answer questions about the writing process, the publishing process and more.  Ron has published three successful Crime Novels set in Shropshire and has won prizes for his work.

Free, but please book.

Rhyme Time at the Library!

Every Monday 2-2.30pm

Half an hour of nursery rhymes and singing, suitable for under 5s. No need to book.

Story Time at the Library!

Every Wednesday 10.30am.

A free story session aimed at pre-school children. No need to book.

Lego at the Library

Every Thursday 3.15-4.15pm Every Saturday 11am-2pm

Self-guided Lego play! Free of charge Suitable for all ages (children require parental supervision)

No booking required, just drop in!

Hearing Loss Support Hubs

Usually 1st Wednesday every month [Wed 7 Dec]

Hearing aid support Hub run by NHS trained volunteers. Usually the first Wednesday of every month. Battery changes and hearing aid cleaning.

Booking is now essential for this, please contact the Hearing Loss Support Service on 01743 342168 or email shls@community-resource.org.uk to make an appointment.
