The Rise And Rise Of Michael Rimmer (15)

OFS at The Hermon Chapel
Wednesday 10th July  7:30pm

Peter Cook stars in this 1970 British political satire in which he starts as the new boy at an advertising agency - and ends up becoming the first President of the UK. Cook in the title role rises through the ranks by virtue of being a spin maestro - rebranding a line of sweets, creating propaganda films, and even claiming gold has been struck in the North Sea. Co-written by Cook, David Frost and Monty Python pair John Cleese and Graham Chapman, Cook's cold performance is the perfect foil for the Who's Who cast of British comedy at the time.

This sharp, witty film is still relevant today, particularly with the part played by polls in determining government policies and the way in which such polls can be manipulated, and it's hard to understand why Michael Rimmer has been rather forgotten over the years.

Run time: 1 hours 34 mins

Imogen Poots is excellent in this true-life tale as the British aristocrat and heiress Rose Dugdale. Born into extreme wealth and privilege, Dugdale not only renounced this upbringing but also weaponised it when she became an active volunteer in the Irish republican movement in the 1970s. Essentially it's a taut heist movie – Dugdale masterminded an ambitious art raid on a stately home, intending to barter the stolen paintings for the release of IRA prisoners. But the film also doubles as a fascinating psychological study of fanaticism, with Poots's expressive performance unpeeling the layers beneath Dugdale's fervent belief in her cause.

(This is the second screening in our new 'world and independent' evenings programmed by the volunteer programmers from kinokulture - they'll be on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month).

Chaplin (15)

OFS at Hermon Chapel
Wednesday 4th September  7:30pm

Robert Downey Jr takes the lead role magnificently in this award-winning masterpiece on the legendary Charlie Chaplin, tracing his life from poverty-stricken childhood in London all the way through to a phenomenally successful film career. But although he was able to reflect wondrous, magical humour in his work, his private life was afflicted with infamy, sadness and a growing sense of loss.

The story of Chaplin is the story of cinema, as we watch him grow from developing silent-era slapstick to becoming one of the most important, pioneering fathers of film making, the art-form of a new century.

Chaplin's complex and dramatic career is brought to life by a stunning array of actors, with Downey supported by top-notch performances from the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Dan Aykroyd and Kevin Kline - with perfect pitch from director Richard Attenborough.

Run Time: 2 hours 9 mins
