Village Home Front - EVACUEES

Dear Blogger

EVACUEES - a couple of images have got distorted so I have attached them separately.

Plans to evacuate children from the cities started early, and many, particularly women, took on the enormous task of organising arrangements in the cities and rehoming the children in thousands of villages all over the country, including Ruyton XI Towns and Baschurch.  Some of the children probably thought this was a great adventure, others would have been traumatised by being taken away from family and familiar surroundings.

We all know about the rescue of thousands of German Jewish children who came to Britain on the Kindertransport.  Many of these children were billited in several places in Shropshire.  One lad who came to Church Stretton grew up and became a successful farmer, father of Ray Schaeffer who, with his wife Margaret, kept the Top Shop on the corner of Brownhill & Little Ness Road.

In more recent times several Syrian families were given homes in Oswestry, Ukranian children lived at the Vicarage and still there are children escaping war in Gaza.  Sadly, it is as ever - men wage war and women and children suffer the consequences.
